So I've recently found some 2 year old Demerol in a plastic bag (my own perscription) and I'd like to know if it is worth keeping. Some internet says it gets more potent and some internet says it loses potency.
Anyone have experience taking old Demerol? I have an upcoming oral surgery and I'm wondering if its safe to take instead of the Meprozine they perscribed me. 3/5/2008 11:04:17 PM |

Throw it away. Many drugs change chemically over time.
Off the top of my head Nitroglycerin comes to mind, it loses potency significantly after it expires. Regardless of whether something is more or less potent, it's not what it's supposed to be and I wouldn't take it. 3/5/2008 11:10:28 PM |

last year when that horrible horrible stomach norovirus was going around nothing would work. And I mean *nothing*. I found some expired Phenergan and took a chance. I felt 200 times better an hour later, so it worked in my favor, but then again I had exhausted a number of options already. 3/5/2008 11:16:16 PM |

it shouldn't HURT you.
usually the pharmacy throws a one year expiration date on everything they send out, so i wouldn't read too much into the date. especially on opiates. since you said they're 2 years old, i guess they're out of date by a year. i used to be very interested in opiates and i asked different doctors and pharmacists what this particular type of expired drug would do, what it meant to be expired.
the common denominator was that they could potentially become SLIGHTLY more OR less potent as time progressed, but that it would likely stay the same for a really long time before it fluctuated.
in other words, based off personal experience and the words of a number of professionals, i think that you'll be ok - as far as safety goes.
and i guess you know that meprozine which contains meperidine(aka demerol). i cant tell by your wording, but it seems that you know its the same and are trying to avoid buying the prescription for the same thing since you already have it. but its not that expensive.
and as with any opiate drug, dont take more than necessary to take care of pain, and dont take it longer than necessary after the pain stops! 3/5/2008 11:54:16 PM |

actually, back when i was researching drugs, there were TONS of closet tww pillheads and lurkers who jump on stuff like that. people with 0 posts would PM someone who said they had some percocet, etc. and on the other hand, if you actually publicly expressed interest in pills, pretty much everyone on here would PM you any time they had their wisdom teeth out or got hurt etc. i remember all types of users and even lurkers hitting me up trying to sell me pills. ESPECIALLY when they get back from christmas and spring break, cause those are 2 of the most common wisdom tooth times
