How many of you still regularly play board games?

I did a thread search and didn't really see any threads about anything like this.

I'm not talking monopoly or clue, I'm talking Power Grid, Twilight Imperium 3rd, Settlers of Catan, etc

I've just recently stumbled on http://www.boardgamegeek.com/ and I'm really interested in this.

Yes, I know, I'm a super huge nerd, no need to point that out. I've come to accept that, lol.

although it's tough to get a game together since it takes about 8-10 hours for a good one

^ I've read a good bit about that one, and thought it was interesting

don't think I have the type of friends that would be interested though, so I'm having to think of some better gateway games to get them involved

We play some Axis and Allies and shit around here occasionally.

War of the Ring, A&A, Shogun, etc. Mostly war-sim type games.

how is shogun? Is it tough to pick up?

I'd like to get my usual video game group into larger games like that, but I also realize it would be completely stupid to throw something like Twilight at them to begin with

I always loved Axis and Allies, but never really had anyone that would play when growing up

I love playing Risk but none of my friends around here really play board games. And it takes like 3 hrs for a game.

^^Shogun is about as easy to learn as Axis and Allies...problem is that it's a bit hard to find and costly.

^That's the main problem I have with board games. The good ones takes forever to play.

I'm a big settlers fan, I'll kill any of you in it (especially with the expansion). But my favorite is puerto rico... that game is awesome.

^^ I considered PR, but after reading a bunch of reviews and threads about non-gamers, I didn't think that was a good choice to convince people to begin playing

Yeah PR is pretty crazy to try and learn. But its actually pretty simple. I used to work at a track out program with middle schoolers at the YMCA and some of those kids played it pretty well. We used to sit around and play board games (Settlers, PR mostly) and card games (Bang!, Phase 10) all day. Best job ever.

I really don't know anyone who is more of a boardgame nerd than me. We have friends over or go somewhere at least a couple times a week to play board games, usually Settlers, but other stuff too... Risk, Pictionary, Cranium, basically anything that involves a good deal of skill.

And to top it off, I am actually a member of the National Scrabble Association. I have played in different tournaments in Indiana, Tennessee, Connecticut, and Oregon. I'd do more but being in the military makes it tough to make time to attend, much less get better like I'd like to. I am one badass Scrabble player though. I think my lifetime NSA record is around 50-20. Granted that is playing in the lower divisions. It's kinda funny because I really don't fit the stereotype at all, but I really really enjoy it. That being said, if anyone ever wants to play hit me up on Wordbiz. My s/n is jrbrooks.

I don't play that many board games. Usually it's stuff like mad gab, loaded questions, scattergories, etc.

I guess trivial pursuit and cranium cound as board games though.

holy shit, Apples to Apples FTMFW!! I haven't played that in a long while. "The Dump" will always win.

Back to legit board games, I could go for a nice game of Risk.

You can't go wrong with Settlers or Carcassone. Those are the two best choices to get people into Euro-style board games -- not too long and not too many rules to remember.

I almost went to the actual Carcassone when I was in France, but I settled for the game.

My friends want me to play Power Grid when they do, but it looks damn complicated. I love me some Risk and Stratego.

Anyone know of any fun 2-player board games?

My fiance and I love to play, but only have party games such as cranium, would you rather, etc...

any fun 2-player board games out there?

^ I just went into a game store and asked the clerk to recommend some. He picked Lost Cities, which is mostly a card game but has a board component to it, really just for organizational purposes though - but it's still fun. And Carcassonne also works with two people.

Lost Cities is supposed to be THE game to get your gf/fiancee/wife involved in gaming...supposed to be a great gateway 2 player game

I really wish I had someone I could play axis and allies with..I never owned it, but had the PC game and used to play for hours on it

In our circle of friend, its often Ticket to Ride, Primordial Soup, Carcassonne, Puerto Rico, Power Grid, and a bunch of others... and we do the card games too. I think they played Age of Empire and Shogun and some other stuff too. We got big into about a year or year and a half ago and just amassed this collection that we occasionally play.

Oh, and one thing we tried to do once was Ice to Apples. We got a bottle of Ice 101 (101 proof peppermint liquor type thing) and a shot glass, and played apples to apples. The person whose card was chosen had to do a shot of the Ice 101, and we just kept going until the bottle was empty. It was pretty nasty. Two or three people threw up immediately afterwards. It was incredible.

Haha a friend of mine and I made Settlers a drinking game. One of us chooses 2 and one of us chooses 12, and whenever it's rolled, we either do a shot or slam a beer. Since the odds of rolling a 2 or 12 are 1 in 36, you'd think it wouldn't happen that often, but it's amazing how sometimes they come in spurts. I remember him drinking 6 beers one game. It definitely adds a new component.

I'm sure you have heard of this, but theres a variant of monopoly where instead of using the money, you use beer. I think each beer is worth 200 dollars (so when you pass go, you collect a beer). When you pay or owe somebody, you drink the amount you owe.

I would also like to recommend Shadows over Camelot. Instead of competing with the other players, you work together to try to beat the game. I don't know if there are many other games like that, but I don't know of any. My brother seemed to like that fact, and I think he has every decent game that's ever been made.

^^ I really want to buy it for myself, but it is best with 5 or 6ish players, and I usually either have just two people or more like 15, which is where Apples to Apples comes in handy.

^ For the party games, have you tried Incan Gold or No Thanks? I've heard those are both pretty good.

That, and you can download Werewolf for free, seems like it would be fun.

My regular group of friends (that I'm trying to get interested in board gaming) totals about 4-5 each time we all get together, so I think that would work fine with SoC

BTW, if any of you are interested in Twilight Imperium III, but have no idea either a) how to play or b) what the actual gameplay would look like, there is a phenominal 2 and 3 player tutorial that has step by step session reports including pictures, and is EXTREMELY helpful.

I am very interested in the game, but wanted to see just how difficult it was to play (it's like a 5-6 hour game), and I'm understanding 99% of what's going on in the tutorials.

Here is that website: http://www.preeminent.org/steve/games/ti3/ti3demo/
