.... I bought this car less then a year ago and the previous owner said the service engine light was on due to a computer problem, but then i got it inspected today they said that there was a "secondary air injection system malfunction". Are they trying to rip me off or can i reset the service engine light and pass?

You got lied to when you bought the car.

You have to get the problem fixed, or it won't pass inspection. There is no way to just reset the light and get it inspected.

doesn't matter if the CEL was on because of a computer problem or anything else. if it's on it won't pass.

Disconnect both battery cables from the battery, and take the bulb out of the cluster from your check engine light. Now put the cables on backwards on teh battery for 10 seconds. That is the OBD2 procedure to sneak around the inspection.

Reverse the cables, drive to an inspection station.

Enjoy.

i mean seriously. all the advice/info you have given is absolutely horrible, in this thread and the other about the side mirror that was broken.. and you call yourself a tech.

you cant just disconnect the battery and take the bulb out. the scanner will find the code.
a lot of places you have to drive at least 100 miles after disconnecting the battery.

dont give out shady advice.

The CEL was on in my '96 Contour beater car, so I pulled the ECM fuse and some other relay for 10 minutes. Popped them back in and drove across the street and it passed inspection. Saturns work the same way-I used to have a '99 SL1.

On my nissan I can just reset the ECU using a screwdriver. Did it the day before I went to get my car inspected (a CEL was on for the MAF and TPS) and it passed fine.

I got busted like that on the Focus one time. We cleared all the codes out before taking it in with an OBD2 reader my friend had. He even cleared the ones that were passed. Well you have to drive a fuck load to get two of the tests to register so the car failed and had to get brought back two days later.

You can have one test not registered and they can still pass you though.

1.) drive to advance auto (yeah, the parts store)
2.)tell the guy @ the counter you want to him to turn off the CEL (it's a free service, they have some kinda hand-held that hooks up to the car's diagnostic system)
3.)pass inspection
4.)profit
