my DVD player all of a sudden quit working. no power, no nothing.

i opened it up and looked around the powersupply board, and saw a swollen electrolytic capacitor, looked like it had popped internally.

pulled it out, found it was a 10V 1000uF cap, wtf? this is a 12VDC power supply, why would they put a 10V cap in there?

replaced it with a spare 35V cap i had (little too large, it just barely fit), plugged it in and works like new.

i'm badass.

just thought I'd let y'all know.

I salute you. Did a similar thing with my motherboard a few years ago.

im suspecting that they do shit like that, because that's a perfect way to cause a device to fail after a couple years of slight but continuous overvoltage.

then they can either charge you $30-50 for the non-warranty repair of a 75 cent cap, or make you buy a new device.

"disposable electronics", indeed

:grr:
