I work in a corporate communications department and we need a new camera for photographing events and various other stuff around the office.
We're looking for a good camera with a great flash. We've borrowed a Canon Digital SLR and the flash sucks.
What do you guys suggest? We're also looking for a smaller'ish camera that we can travel with if anyone has a suggestion for that as well. 3/12/2008 1:26:37 PM |

canon digital SLR, get a separate flash.
the included flash sucks for a reason--because people use their separate flashes

you need to spend more money.
At the very least you can get away with a Nikon D40, SB600 flash, and the 18-135 lens. That is right around a grand. 3/12/2008 1:47:33 PM |

Nikon D40 Its been around for a while but its great.
My opinion and I'm sure that someone else here will have a strong e-opinion but you asked so you got mine.
If you need to spend more then get the D60. 3/12/2008 1:53:30 PM |

Pretty much all built-in flashes are going to suck. Just buy an external flash as ScHpEnXeL mentioned and learn how to use it. 3/12/2008 1:56:28 PM |

Ok, so I'm looking at the Nikon D60, or the Digital Rebel SLR...
Opinions?

You really can't go wrong with a D40 or D60 kits, as they are pretty damn cheap now. The Rebel Xt and XTi's are getting pretty cheap now that the XSi is out.
Personally, I'd suggest getting a used 20D or 30D and get a 430ex flash unit. You can find used 30D's for about 500ish and 430ex for 200ish. Grab a 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS for about 300is (I've seen them low as 200) and you got a pretty good kit. 3/12/2008 3:32:22 PM |

btw, in my post above, I meant to say the 20D is around 500ish, 30D is about 600-700ish. XTi is a nice camera 3/12/2008 3:55:45 PM |

You'll want something with a wider angle lens than the 28. 17-18mm on the wide end is needed for any indoor or group stuff. 3/12/2008 4:44:40 PM |

^ That's a good point, especially if you're using a camera with an APS sized sensor i.e. A camera that costs <$2500. 3/12/2008 4:50:05 PM |

Just ordered the D60...should be here on friday.
I'll see how this does for us. I'll order a nicer lense/flash if I feel we need one.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. 3/12/2008 5:18:35 PM |
