So like a massive noob, I've put two tanks of regular unleaded into my loaner '00 Celica GTS, a car that actually takes premium (being a noob, I just figured "Its a toyota, I'm going to put regular in it").
How should I go about undoing the damage I've caused? The car has developed a hesitation accompanied by a sound that I can only describe as a "gurgle" under acceleration (for a short time after its started from cold). For the record, it has premium fuel in it now and I've got some techron I can toss in the next tank. 3/13/2008 11:02:56 AM |

Probably some predetonation and knock. Run a couple more tanks of premium through and let us know. 3/13/2008 11:15:02 AM |

i wouldn't worry about it. it's got a knock sensor and probably a "this owner is a dumbass" timing map in the ECU for 87 octane 3/13/2008 11:22:29 AM |

My car is supposed to take premium and I use regular. Unless your car has forced induction or high compression it isn't always needed. However I think the GTS engine has a pretty high compression motor, it sounds like it's not having a great time either. You could run octane booster,or drain the tank and refill it, or add techron. Personally I've had bad experiences with octane booster and techron in my cars. I have had to drain a tank on my brother's turbo car when someone put 87 in it though. I'd try to fit as much premium in there as you can to dilute it out some. As mentioned, the ECU will probably compensate for it some.
I did date someone who put diesel in her celica once (durrrrr)

i wouldn't even waste money on premium if it's a loaner. the car has timing retard so it won't hurt a thing. besides, i'm sure the car sees enough damage just from the drivers being it's a loaner. beat the shit out of the car!3/13/2008 5:16:44 PM |

My friend is loaning it to me. As a good friend, I am trying not to fuck up his car.
Anyways, thanks for the responses. 3/13/2008 6:14:26 PM |

^^oh, well that sucks. i was thinking it was like a rental or something. good to know you actually give a shit. on that note, don't worry about the wrong gas. the car's computer will compensate for the lower octane to prevent engine damage. all toyotas (and most newer cars for that matter) does this automatically. the only downside is you'll notice a loss of performance and mpg. fill up with shell v-power next go around for the best of the best. 3/13/2008 8:05:58 PM |
