the response here, as well as the rest of the blogosphere, is underwhelming.

Its good to see most people have jumped on the Tibet Bandwagon. Avoid placing all the blame on the Chinese.

Key facts,

1) There are 5 million Tibetans in China, why aren't they all revolting?!

2) It is not the Chinese attacking the Tibetans, but the other way around, Tibetans are attacking Chinese and Chinese shops.

3) What the hell is China suppose to do in the light of riots in one of the its key western cities? Let them burn everything down? The videoes you see on CNN are videos of Tibetans burning shit down to the ground, not Chinese.

4) I am sure this was all a random without any planning. Riots broke out in Sichuan, Ganxu, Qinghai, and Tibet arond the same time.

5) The Chinese always have claimed soverignty over Tibet for, however you look at it, for least 100 years. Tibet have always been under heavy Chinese influence or direct rule since the Tang Dynasty, over 900 years ago.

I don't understand why this is getting so much press coverage, the scale doesnt even come close to "challenge" Chinese rule there.

And Boycott of the Olympics?! That will not change anything, a vast majority of the Chinese population see Tibet as a part of their country, we should really aviod alienating that part of the world again.

Tibet had been an independent, autonomous, self-ruling nation right up until the unprovoked communist invasion of 1959, which sent their government into exile at Dharamsala, India.

The Tang was 1200-1400 years ago, and had no control or significant influence over the Tibeteans, unless you consider having the Tang's capital city conquered by Tibet and being forced to negotiate a peace treaty with Tibet to be some sort of "influence or direct rule" over them

deerpark, you don't know fuck from your asshole.. now go back to ChitChat and quit pretending like you know anything about this subject.

I saw some monks crying on the news tonight--they had just gotten word by telephone that others were beaten and killed. It was bad.

I had no idea the Chinese were cracking down so hard when I posted above--I didn't mean to be flip. I truly regret the error.

well yeah, the government got out guns and shot people.

WTG Tibet and Burma for showing that azns living under oppressive regimes have no hope for the future. Sorry we couldn't help. We sympathize and all, but you know, lol, China is a big trade partner of ours.

i think DNL meant that he hopes the tibetean struggles can survive long enough to cause global outrage? that if they can continue to the olympic ceremonies, that maybe china will have to concede to increased international pressure. that their deaths and struggles wont have been completely in vain

at least i hope that's what he meant.

Letting Tibet go free would create a dangerous precedent for the Chinese government. First, you have large numbers of ethnic Tibetans living in bordering provinces who might try to take their territories with them. Also, you have other ethnic minorities, such as the Muslim Uighur in Xinjiang that are also itching for independence. Only 10% of China's population is non-Han (ethnic Chinese), but 10% of 1.2 billion is a lot of people, especially since these minorities tend to be concentrated in border provinces...

Tibetan rioters have sadly played right into the PRC's hands. By rioting and attacking ethnic Chinese, they've provided the PRC government with the video clips they need to rally public support and justify an aggressive and violent crackdown. When coupled with the upcoming Olympics, it creates a nationalist, anti-Tibetan backlash that will harden then against any outside criticism. For China, the Olympics are their debutante ball, and if it is perceived that the Tibetans spoiled the party, then things can only end tragically.

As much as y'all may hate the Chinese, they have ruled Tibet in a much better manner than the Lama's did.

The official policy of the Tibetan Government in exile is Autonomy, not independence.

Just look up feudalism and Tibet. up until the PLA went into Tibet slavery was still legal and practiced wildly by the Lamas and ruling classes.

Props to Bush for addressing the issue. It took too long but at least it happened in a direct manner.

tibet IS ALREADY autonomous. the monks just riot cuz they're misguided. while the vast majority of monks are peaceful, there's violent ones when you factor in the fact that there's millions of tibetans living in that region.

Also, it was right to crack down on the riots, as

1) it wasn't peaceful protesting.
2) The rioters behaved in a way that would incriminate them in what are called hate crimes in the US

From what I gathered, the monks were running a peaceful demonstration, but when some of the Chinese People's Armed Police overreacted and beat a couple of them in public, people watching attacked the police, and what started as a peaceful protest became a violent, anti-Chinese riot. From that one incident, the frustrations of many Tibetans poured forward, burning Chinese property and attacking ethnic Han.

That's why the Dalai Lama was so upset with the violent protests because it gives the Chinese the perfect excuse to crackdown on the region as well as the necessary propaganda video to build up nationalist support.

UHHHHHH....Texas was an independent republic for 10 years. They fought for their independence. Later they joined the United States of their own volition.
