I'd just do it myself.

that's got to hurt. so i'm assuming she gets copious amounts of oxycontin, morphine, or fentanyl. or all the above. i wonder why she's looking for life terminating drugs when cancer patients pretty much always have them.
maybe she doesn't realize she could just eat 10 oxycontin and slap on a few fentanyl patches and go to sleep very peacefully.
that makes no sense, i wonder what she considers a life terminating drug.] 3/18/2008 12:54:21 PM

It's very likely that for a condition so rare there just isn't a treatment. Who is going to pay to research something that only 10 people a year, worldwide will get.

Am I missing something? These tumors don't get like this overnight...so either she wasn't informed of the severity of her condition or she refused care...and since healthcare in France is free, I'm thinking it's not an issue of cost.
From http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic748.htm:
Quote : | "In recent series, the 5-year patient survival rate varies from 50-80%, with the majority of large studies indicating patient survival rates of higher than 70%." |
Quote : | " * Low-grade and low-stage tumors should be treated by surgery followed, in most cases, by radiation therapy. * This treatment regimen should be applied to the majority of ENB, with the possible exception of T4 and the highest Hyams grade cases. In these advanced and poorly differentiated cases, the role of preoperative chemotherapy and radiation should be decided on an individual basis. * The authors do not see a role for chemotherapy in the routine treatment of ENB. However, for patients with advanced or metastatic disease, systemic chemotherapy as part of multimodality therapy could be an option." |

that 200 number is really lowballing it. at least compared to what i've been reading about it. i keep getting 945 (which is still less than 1000 total, but its 4.5 times higher than they're saying).
also:
Quote : | "Reviews since the first description by Berger and Luc in 1924 never reported more than a hundred cases, stressing the rarity of the tumour. However, a thorough literature review revealed a total of 945 reported cases. In our search we found a total of 1,457 cases chronicled in the literature of which perhaps 487 were cited in more than one paper, bringing the total of reported cases to 945. Author cases accounted for 198 and therefore collaborative efforts accounted for 747 cases." |

and besides, just because a cancer is rare as hell doesn't mean it can't be treated with drugs used for similar cancers. i'm betting she either refused treatment or treatment was unsuccessful (and i think the article would have mentioned the latter if it were the case)
don't get me wrong here, this is a terrible thing for anyone to endure, and i agree that at this point not much can be done to improve her QOL, but i just think sometimes people get caught up in what is now, and forget how it got to this point in the first place. 3/18/2008 1:02:41 PM

she cant smell, taste, or see. she is horrifying to behold. she is a burden to those around her i imagine. she just wants to end misery all across the board - for her and her family. sometimes doing the right thing means the ultimate sacrifice...regardless of what the preacher says. 3/18/2008 1:22:36 PM

ok granted, she didn't purposefully cause this tumor, but can we not make the comparison to someone who eats themselves to 600+ lbs and subsequently grows into their couch? do they deserve euthanasia if they want it? 3/18/2008 1:26:16 PM

^ i cant logically compare this to eating yourself to death
i would have to consider the possibility that her teaching salary was never even close to enough to fix this while it was progressing (if she had to pay) or she was told it was incurable and she did what she could till it got this advanced. she can't have that long to live regardless. 3/18/2008 1:28:44 PM

If you believe killing yourself will send you to hell, I don't see how getting someone to do it for you makes a big difference. You still played an active role in your death by consenting to what the person did. 3/18/2008 1:32:40 PM
