Quote : | "NC State head men’s basketball coach Sidney Lowe has announced that his Wolfpack squad will play home-and-home contests against the Florida Gators each of the next two seasons. NC State will travel to Gainesville for a game on January 3, 2009 and will play host to the SEC school in Raleigh on January 3, 2010.
“Even though we play in the toughest RPI conference in the country, our goal is for our non-conference schedule to be challenging as well,” said Lowe. “Facing the team that has won the last two national titles will certainly fulfill that goal.”
The Wolfpack also has upcoming games scheduled against the Arizona Wildcats. The Wolfpack will play in Tucson in 2009-2010 and the Pac-10 school will come to the RBC Center in 2010-2011." |

Both teams needed to upgrade their non-conference schedules. When I was a UF student in the mid-90s, Florida played big home-and-home series (Kansas with Paul Pearce, Wake Forest with Tim Duncan, etc.) This year, the Gators played only ONE pre-conference game outside of the Sunshine State (a loss in the national-title rematch in Columbus). That schedule made NCSU's non-conference slate look tough by comparison. 3/26/2008 3:01:02 PM |

It's really amusing. When our previous coach was here there were complaints about how lousy State's non-conference schedule was. Now we are scheduling tougher opponents and we are complaining. Mind you, Florida did have a down year this year but it goes to show you can't please everyone. 3/26/2008 3:16:19 PM |

Nobody's complaining in this thread.
I personally think that they will be challenging games for our new coach, but will serve as an early measuring stick for his coaching abilities.3/26/2008 3:24:02 PM |

I have every reason to believe Florida will be solid again next season. The Arizona coaching situation is so bizarre, who knows? 3/26/2008 3:36:16 PM |

It's like insurance for Sidney and/or Fowler. If he doesn't get fired, plays them, and loses, he can say he was trying to build the program up by welcoming a tough non-conference schedule and playing better teams. But if he does get fired - that's almost 2 certain L's for the next coach/AD, making him look bad.

Being that I am from Florida and have friends that are UF grads, I am pumped about this. Too bad we'll get smoked in both games and then I'll have to listen to them gloat. Oh well - I wish this shit had gone down when I was a student. It would have given me another reason to go party in Gainesville. 3/26/2008 4:18:36 PM |

playing tough non-conference games even when they lost most of them certainly hasn't hurt davidson this year
we could use the challenge, pop the egos early so they get motivated to give a damn before it's halfway through the season

Sid also mentioned early on that we were in contact with Kentucky and UMass about scheduling some games. Kentucky is always a good name to have on the schedule and UMass is always a competitive A-10 program.
I'd like to see us play a strong Big 12 team. While Kansas would be a dream series, I'd be satisfied with Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, or Texas A&M.
Another thing I'd like to see done for future schedules is to face UNC-G or Elon at the Greensboro Coliseum, and Davidson, Winthrop, or UNC-C at the Bobcats Arena when the ACCT is being held at those venues. It's always good to get the players some experience in those arenas sometime earlier in the year. 3/26/2008 6:40:17 PM |

I like the idea alot! Now our players will no longer be in dream land the first half of the season because they beat a bunch of scrubs......they may acutally get better now! 3/27/2008 8:16:39 AM |

i agree with the premise, but losing to ECU and New Orleans this year would have thought to have been a good "ego popping experience
i like this idea better:

this helps with recruiting big time.
especially considering that some of the top players in the country are going to uf and ua...incoming recruits want to play against the best and this can only help us. 3/27/2008 9:08:48 AM |
