Here's an interesting story from the Washington Post. In 2006, Obama wanted to take credit for a immigration bill that he never worked on. And it wasn't the first time.
Quote : | "As the half-dozen senators -- including John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) -- headed to announce their plan, they met Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who made a request common when Capitol Hill news conferences are in the offing: "Hey, guys, can I come along?" And when Obama went before the microphones, he was generous with his list of senators to congratulate -- a list that included himself.
"I want to cite Lindsey Graham, Sam Brownback, Mel Martinez, Ken Salazar, myself, Dick Durbin, Joe Lieberman . . . who've actually had to wake up early to try to hammer this stuff out," he said.
To Senate staff members, who had been arriving for 7 a.m. negotiating sessions for weeks, it was a galling moment. Those morning sessions had attracted just three to four senators a side, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) recalled, each deeply involved in the issue. Obama was not one of them. " |

This is definitely troubling. Less troubling, for sure, than lying about being under sniper fire, less troubling, absolutely, than lying about Iran supporting Al Qaeda in Iraq, but of course it is a problem.
I would fucking love to be able to vote for an infallible presidential candidate. As that is unlikely to happen in my or any of our lifetimes, I'll vote for the guy with the best policies, especially if he's a charismatic leader who I think can do real good for the country.
Also, FWIW, Arlen Spector (R-PA) said this in the same article:

Obama has also lied about being a law professor. http://www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/trailhead/archive/2008/03/26/bending-the-law.aspx
In fact, was only a lecturer. The Univ. Of Chicago's Press Office say he was qualified to be a professor, but "never had the time". Of course, anyone that has spent anytime in grad school knows there is a heap of difference between a lecturer (someone that just teaches a few classes) and a professor (someone that teaches and publishes scholarly work). I don't know how things work in law schools, but in economics you can be a lecturer with only an MA, but you have to have a PhD to be a university professor. (Hint: Most folk in grad school want to grow up to be the professors because they get the big bucks, the acclaim, and all the chicks).
Obama of course knew the difference. He just figured no one give a shit if he fudged his resume a little.

His health care proposal is a bust, his position on Iraq is at best unclear and at worst disastreous, the way he makes it sound like NAFTA and corporate profits are evil is at best dishonest rhetoric and at worst relays a basic lack of understanding of economic issues.
Black or white, these proposals are bad for the American people. 3/27/2008 11:08:12 AM |

I don't know that that is really a big deal. A lecturer is a faculty member and in loose conversation could be called a professor, just as assistant and associate professors are referred to as professor, though that is technically the highest rank.
Now some people might get a little bit more upset if he was an instructor but even still in regular conversation most people are not going to know the difference.3/27/2008 1:06:15 PM |

^^ and ^ Faculty, yes. And some colleges allow lecturers to hold a professor title and some don't--I would like to see the specific policy at the college in question.
In any event, Obama knew the difference in a professor and a lecturer. And ignorance on the part of others about faculty titles is not a valid excuse for morphing a particular title.

There's also a big difference between the Bosnia story and this one.
Saying you're a professor, when actually you're a lecturer, is at most mildly flavoring the truth. The two positions are similar. In addition, and the most important factor is: Obama is not running on a platform of being a professor.
This is in large contrast to Hillary Clinton's comment about Bosnia. She is running on a platform of having foreign policy experience. She says she went in under gunfire, and then is shown as meeting up and taking photos with kids, that's a contrast to an issue she is campaigning with. 3/27/2008 6:48:28 PM |

That is a very politician-like thing to do (which has so far been unusual for Obama). But it's a far, far cry away from the lies from Hillary.
So really, he still comes out on top in that competition.
And this whole professor/lecturer thing to me is amusing, because I had no idea Obama even taught, and that actually makes me respect him even more. Most students don't really distinguish the two when addressing a teacher, and i bet some even called him "Dr." obama (i've always been told if you don't know if they're dr or not, just say dr anyway). I dont have words to express how much of a non-issue this is to me, and I bet overall, pointing out that Obama was a lecturer at such a prominent university can only help him.
And here's a great clip of Obama in a debate. McCain is sitting easy right now, but once Obama gets the nomination, he's really going to struggle to keep up with obama: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv7K8S4kGQM3/27/2008 7:32:20 PM |

But, then again, I keep forgetting how well Obama speaks.

PROFESSOR VS. SENIOR LECTURER
Quote : | "The University of Chicago released a statement clarifying Obama's status at the university. He is a senior lecturer and has cited that he is a constitutional law professor on the trail. That's something that has caused some criticism and allegations of exaggeration. It's something the Clinton campaign has pushed as well in conference calls with reporters in the past week." |
Quote : | "Here's the statement:
'The Law School has received many media requests about Barack Obama, especially about his status as 'Senior Lecturer.' From 1992 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004, Barack Obama served as a professor in the Law School. He was a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996. He was a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004, during which time he taught three courses per year. Senior Lecturers are considered to be members of the Law School faculty and are regarded as professors, although not full-time or tenure-track. The title of Senior Lecturer is distinct from the title of Lecturer, which signifies adjunct status. Like Obama, each of the Law School's Senior Lecturers have high-demand careers in politics or public service, which prevent full-time teaching. Several times during his 12 years as a professor in the Law School, Obama was invited to join the faculty in a full-time tenure-track position, but he declined." |
