"As a member of the second class since 1985 to leave Duke without enjoying a Final Four trip, I'm not happy with how this team, just like last year's, struggled down the stretch....I certainly appreciate the effort the team put forth Saturday and don't doubt DeMarcus Nelson was trying his damndest. But Duke students don't sleep in the cold for two months just to see players give it their all."
Oh, the pathos. My heart bleeds for the Duke students who slept in the cold for two months only to be rewarded with a 28-6 disaster and a mere three wins over Sweet 16 teams. (The Chronicle Online)" |

So 'miraculous that in a 2 year span we went 57-1? (Edit: And losing only to the UCLA dynasty)
We should have 3 national championships (P.S. Thanks Dean Smiff)

Our championships more than 20 years ago are really starting to lose their luster. I'd give it about 10 years and our history will have about as much weight as the San Francisco's, Marquette's, and Villanova's of the college basketball world. At some point we need to make another run, or our recent history starts to really pull our overall program down with the rest of the "mediocres." 3/27/2008 2:43:16 PM |

I agree somewhat, but Marquette and Villanova each have one title in their school's history...State has 2
there are only (iirc) 5 schools with more titles than us (and a few with 2 also)
UCLA, Indiana, UNC, Duke, Kentucky
arguably the top 5 college basketball programs of all time
we're on the 2nd tier with a few other schools with 2 titles...Kansas, Michigan State, Louisville
while nobody really remembers Bill Russell leading San Fran to a couple titles back in the 50s, at least our most recent one is in the 80s...but yeah we need to get something going...at least an acc title or a final four sometime in the next 5-6 years3/27/2008 3:11:04 PM |

Anyway... We haven't been a consistently great program since the mid-70s. I think that much is not debateable. That's not to say we can't be again, but the odds are certainly stacked against us.
^ Louisville has TONS more Final Fours and has far more recent success than us. I wouldn't hesistate at all to put them ahead of us...

You lost me at 'I'm reading Personal Fouls'
Every name and date in that book is completely misspelled or the dates don't match the player.
That book is a hatchet job at best.
3 Separate NCAA investigations proved the only illegal things done in his program were players selling thier shoes and ACC Tourney tickets. That's it

Not that I'm disagreeing and saying we're a dynasty, but another intesting statistic:
NC State is one of only 7 (That i can think of) programs that have won a National Title under two (or more) different coaches.
UNC Kentucky NC State UCLA Michigan State Indiana Kansas

^one thing i'll give herb credit for is he did recruit a few nba caliber players...simmons, powell, even hodge...hopefully they can continue to improve their play and make a national name for themselves in the nba...also hopefully the heat sign hodge to a 10-dayer] 3/27/2008 4:08:02 PM |

NyM10 I have to disagree with that. We nearly made the Final Four a couple more times in the 1980s.
In 1985, had we beaten St. John's (one of the best teams in the country that year and at one point ranked #1 in the country) in the Elite Eight we would have been back to the Final Four for the second time in three years. We made the Elite Eight again the following year, only to lose to Kansas. In 1989 we made the Sweet Sixteen but got screwed over by what Billy Packer called the worst call in the history of the NCAAs, when we faced Georgetown. Had we not have gotten screwed over we would have faced Duke in the Elite Eight, a team we could have definitely beat considering we were the ACC Regular Season Champions.
I'd say we are one of the Top 10 Most Historical Basketball Programs
1. UCLA 2. Kentucky 3. UNC 4. Indiana 5. Duke 6. Kansas 7. Louisville 8. Michigan State 9. North Carolina State 10. UConn 11. Cincinnati 12. Oklahoma State 13. Florida (their first NCAA tournament appearance was in 1987, and they only have like 14 NCAA tournament appearances) 14. Ohio State (they have a bunch of Final Fours even though some have been rescinded) 15. Georgetown 16. Michigan (they have 6 Final Fours, and should be here although the program has fallen off a ton b/c of probation) 17. Arkansas 18. Syracuse 19. Arizona 20. Villanova 21. Maryland 22. Marquette 23. Illinois 24. Oklahoma 25. Texas
Some debate can go on between the teams in the 14-25 range. In some instances you could move a program up and one down, and it wouldn't really matter much to the rankings.3/28/2008 12:48:14 PM |

I was afraid to put them in there b/c I thought people would criticize the choice to put them in there. And I can't completely blame them. The Dons really haven't done anything since. I'd like to put them in there b/c of the fact that they won 2 national championships, and that Bill Russell was the sole reason why they decided to widen the lane. That had a very big historical impact on the game. 3/28/2008 12:56:48 PM |
