I would have put this in another one of the CCW threads if search were working.
I never drive across campus if I have a gun in the car, I'm just wondering if any parts of Hillsborough or Western are technically on campus, primarily that stretch of Western between Dan Allen and Gorman. I'm living in that area again and don't need the charges. 4/11/2008 12:05:10 AM |

i don't believe it can be considered school property since it's a main road. one side of the road may be their property, but i don't believe they can own/dole out the law on both sides.4/11/2008 12:51:06 AM |

I would suggest calling someone at the university to be safe, maybe campus police. I have been told that that technically if you're on the university side of hilllsbourgh it is in violation to even have a firearm in your car, much less a concealed firearm. Think about how many people drive both those roads with a shotgun or rifle in their car everyday. I am not sure if this person had done any research on the matter, so i would call campus police at 515-3000 to make sure, you will probably get a receptionist that may not know the answer, so you should ask for an officer on duty or Sgt. Farmer. He is a great guy and will set you straight. I'm actually quite interested in what the rule is, so if you find out post it for everyone.

http://www.ncsu.edu/ncsu/public_safety/Department/Jurisdiction.html Technically Campus Police has jurisdiction on any street passing through or adjacent to campus.
http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/enactedlegislation/statutes/html/bysection/chapter_14/gs_14-269.2.html The NC Statute prohibits guns from "educational property". Since those roads are public streets and not campus property, I wouldn't think it would apply. 4/11/2008 3:40:59 AM |

Unless you get pulled for a felony stop are you really that worried about it???
The police can not search through your car and find your pistol locked in the glove compartment unless they have a warrant b.c you were doing something else wrong in the first place. I am sure there are plenty of unlawful people that actually carry their guns onto campus hidden. Afterall all those thugs i get emails about mugging people i am sure do not stash their 9mm's before going on their raids b.c guns are illegal on campus.

yay i go to a college where people are regularly mugged by delinquents that migrate to campus from their slums nearby [/ghetto NCSU]

But that's not the question being asked.

That's my thought - there's no way in hell they could reasonably consider a major thoroughfare part of an educational property (in the academic sense ), just because of proximity.

I dont know if you are a CCW holder, so excuse this if you are, but most CCW holders are typically very conscious of the law.
Its the people packing without a CCW permit that you have to worry about.4/11/2008 12:29:02 PM |

If you get pulled for anything it will show that you have a CCW when the cop runs your tags. I've heard stories about local police giving CCW holders hell whenever they pull them on campus.4/11/2008 2:58:09 PM |

when they run your drivers license it will show that you have a NCCHP...your drivers license number is on your NCCHP...but your license plate tags are independent...what if I'm driving somebody else's car
regardless they tell you to inform the officer that you're a permit holder and let him know what and where you're holding] 4/11/2008 4:00:26 PM |

I own a townhouse on Centennial Campus. Because it is my primary residence, Constitutional Law takes precedence over State Law. I have to register each of my firearms with the Campus Police, however, I am allowed to carry concealed in my vehicle. I can't go walking in the Brickyard with a gun, but I can drive through campus if necessary. I have gone through several checkpoints on Varsity and was pulled about 3 weeks ago on Centennial Campus and had no problems whatsover. As long as you act responsibly, the cops are extremely reasonable.
I keep the gun in my glovebox and my registration/insurance in my visor. I have no need to open my box and I keep my hands on the wheel and tell the officer, "Sir, I have a concealed handgun in my glove box." They usually ask if I have a permit, I tell them yes and I have special permission - my CCW license has my Centennial Campus address on it, so there is no need to investigate further. I don't drive through Main Campus anymore now that I have graduated.4/11/2008 4:10:36 PM |

Organization advocates for concealed carry on campus
Quote : | "A prime example, Tucker said, is the armed robberies that happened on campus last month during the daytime.
Another point, McDowell said, is the 'magical line between Hillsborough Street and the other side of campus.'
People walking on the non-campus side of Hillsborough Street can carry concealed weapons if they have permits, but on the campus side, it is not allowed [emphasis added].
Director of Campus Police, Tom Younce said the group would be allowed to organize, but the decision is ultimately up to the legislature, as the policy on concealed weapons on campus is a state law, not a University regulation." |

Yea your CCW comes up if he runs your ID # through DCI. its a different screen on its on. One screen gives your name address driver history blah blah. another shows if you are a registered sex offender... another shows if you are wanted....and the other shows if you have a CCW permit. If you do have a permit and you didn't mention while I was talkin to you. Im gonna be pissed.4/12/2008 12:00:52 AM |

Dan Allen Drive = On Campus, No CCW
Varsity Drive, Hillsborough, Western = Not on Campus, but NCSU PD has jurisdiction there because it is adjacent to their property. Just because NCSU PD has jurisdiction there, doesn't mean its on campus property. Yes, CCW. No if you are walking on the campus side of the sidewalk on Hillsborough. That is a different story. 4/12/2008 11:40:50 AM |

^^^ I only took the CCW class 2 weeks ago, and after hearing first hand from two officers, they get real pissed off when you dont disclose that you're a CCW permit holder.
Just keep your CCW permit behind your license, and if you have to show your ID to any officer, just hand them the CCW permit and disclose if you are or are not carrying
It doesnt appear that you're the type of guy to get your concealed permit anyhow 4/12/2008 10:55:32 PM |
