Finally some real 5k HD cameras. Supposed to meet the quality of 35mm film because it has a full frame 35mm sensor compared to MUCH smaller ones in previous digital cameras. I just can't imagine the bandwidth/storage that would take to come into common use in the future. I guess it's a long way off though. Oh and it only costs 30k$. heh.

I just think it's funny that digital video is finally catching up to film video. All this hype, "OMG BLUERAY is so high quality!!!" was always overstated because digital video has yet to catch up with film, although it's obviously easier to store and transmit than 35mm reels.

Anyone had any experience with 2-4k cameras or digital negative scanning? I know Japan wants to start up UHDTV (ultra-high definition tv (7,680 × 4,320)) by like 2014-2015. Just gotta find a way to compress that insane 161.5 Gbps bitrate!!

V yeah forgot to make the connection. "Super-hi vision" like UHDTV would be a good comparision to 35mm film (with a widescreen aspect ratio, not 4:3) Although wikipedia says UHDTV is 33 megapixels. So i guess slightly higher than 35mm film.

FYI: good 35mm film is equivalent to a 25MP digital camera in terms of effective resolution. with a 4:3 aspect ratio that's 5774x4330.

^i believe so. i know they have tvs with that kind of resolution. there's a new 150 inch plasma that claims 4x the resolution of 1080p. its not exactly for sale though, they just wanted to beat the last size record of a 103 inch lcd.

UHDTV, I didn't know about this.

How the fuck do you even begin transmitting something that big?

All about compression. I mean Moore's law and all. Who knows.

Compression isn't quite going to cut bandwidth that effectively requires a dedicated bus.

RED's been around for a while.

Peter Jackson show a WWI short called "Crossing the Line" a couple years back.

Here's a a link to some links to a clip -- though I'm not sure if any of them still work.

^the link i posted to the red one was very new, and also the new NHK million fps camera is new. I just can't fathom 1 million frames per second. The possibilities are endless. You'd be able to watch any process in slow mo.

1 million fps isn't exactly a new achievement. This company recently announced a camera capable of 200,000,000 fps:
