a] would one work for three cats to share (this goddamn automatic cat shit catapult thing that's currently there isn't cutting it)
b] can they work with a septic tank? (i.e. not kill it or fill it up with stuff that won't decompose)
c] is the liter less messy than normal stuff? (fucking nasty cats track it everywhere)
d] where can i find one locally? (assuming satisfactory answers to the above) 4/17/2008 9:51:24 PM |

I have a catgenie too now it's worth it to not change the cat litter or scoop every day or even to change out cartridges etc.
a] yes... you can program it to clean the box up to 4x a day
b] check the website catgenie.com cause I don't really know
c] unfortunately it does get tracked quite a bit... still haven't figured out a way to keep that happening... maybe coat the cats' feet with silicon? lol
d] probably can't find one locally, but you can order online
the other thread is dead, so let me say some of the good and bad things about it: good: 1) you don't ever have to touch poop or pee -- this outweighs alot. 2) you don't have to think about it much
bad: 1) Cost: The unit itself is expensive, and then the sanitizer cartridges are only good for 60 washes and they haven't yet been hacked so you could not use them or use your own solution. They cost about $12-$14 apeice, and the plastic washable pellets are about $24 a box and tend to get tracked everywhere-- I've gone thru about 4 boxes to keep the pellets at a comfortable level since I bought the unit in October or so... but then alot of them were also getting lost inside the unit, and I think I fixed that problem so we'll see....
2) Smell. Normally, the smell isn't bad, and you can now buy unscented sanisolution, but once in a while, the cats will have loose stools or will scratch them apart and the scooper won't be able to pick up the little chunks that are left behind... Then you get a nice baked poop smell
3) You do need to take the unit apart and clean it a couple times a year. I just did it for the first time and it really wasn't too bad... kinda cool to see all the parts and everything. I also did a modification to it to keep pellets from getting into the machine as much (I hope)-- it just involved gluing a bit of silicone baking sheet to the bowl.
4) you need a place to put it. I got lucky and was able to pay a plumber to modify the cat litter closet that's under my stairs... otherwise I'd have had to use the half bath for it or my bathroom...both of which are small rooms.

Finally, if you do get one, I recommend instructables.com-- some guy there shows you ways to deal with some of the common problems.

^^ you can always train the cat to use the guest bathroom, or keep the master bathroom door closed
also, there are automatic flushers you can get that flush on a timer
but simply flushing your cat's shit once a day is much less work (and cheaper!,) than scooping litter
of course, if you have a half dozen cats, the automatic flusher may be necessary
