i honestly felt like he's like lots of kids who are proficient at instruments: he seems like a trained monkey. sure he can do that shit well, but he didn't seem to have any feeling in it.
you more frequently see kids like this playing piano or violin, but playing an arrangement of a 40 year old rock song doesn't really make it all that much better.

sort of agree.
while it was pretty amazing from a technical standpoint, it seemed a bit soulless. 4/21/2008 4:36:01 PM |

or you could be jealous and hating on the kid for no reason
of course he doesn't have the entire soulful "meaning" behind all these yet
but that's because he's a kid, give him a break
I'm sure he'll grow into his talent 4/21/2008 4:52:22 PM |

the asian kid is pretty amazing, apparently they are his own arrangements. this is from the his you tube page. apparently his parents set it up for him:
Quote : | "Hi, I'm Sungha Jung from South Korea. My dream is to become a professional acoustic fingerstyle guitarist.
I had been watching my dad play the guitar for awhile before I finally jumped on it myself two years ago. I just turned eleven in September, 2007.
Currently, I am taking weekly classical guitar lessons and teaching myself fingerstyle guitar.
I used to not have tabs for the music that I played in my videos. I just listen and pick them up directly from the sound source in videos available on the internet. However, recently, I have started playing with original tabs whenever they are available to me by courtesy of the authors.
My guitar is custom made to fit my body size, and on it, Thomas Leeb wrote "Keep on grooving to my friend."
I'm very grateful to those prominent guitarists who have had a great influence on my guitar playing. I'll continue to study them and learn more about interpretation of music and various playing techniques.
My daily practice routine lasts for one to two hours when school is open, but I play up to three hours a day during the school breaks.
It usually takes me two to three days to practice and videotape a new piece but sometimes up to a week for more difficult ones.
Last, but certainly not least, I can't thank Ulli Bögershausen enough for being my musical inspiration." |
and to contribute something useful to the thread, i taught myself that stupid "hey there delilah" song in about 10 minutes. i assumed the girls would like it, so far that's not been the case. but its super easy.

Back to the topic....
I'm working on "santa cruz" by david qualey. modern classical/jazz played with a drop D.
and every once in a while I attempt "Clap" by Steve Howe.
If you are a finger picker it's worth the google. Sorry don't have time to link.
Also, "Silver Wheels" by Nancy Wilson (Heart).
All kind of hard to play, but satisfying if you even come close. 4/21/2008 6:13:24 PM |

i'm not jealous of the kid. i've just this sort of kid MANY times before. and this sort of talent doesn't necessarily translate into creativity. they're two very different things in my mind.
i'll take the creative mediocre musician over the technically proficient any day of the week.

at Dollywood I saw a bluegrass band with several nationally recognized musicians
the guitarist did this story of how he learned to play guitar. He said at first he tried to play rock songs to impress girls, after saying this he played some of Stairway to Heaven. He said the girls still didn't like him, so he played the songs with feeling. And I have no idea what he did different the second time, but it really felt different ... like Stairway to Heaven, not some kid trying to play it. 5/9/2008 8:47:52 AM |
