When buying a used car from someone else what is the process of swapping titles. The DMV states that the buyer has to show proof of insurance, what if the insurance that I have is provided by my parents and only for the car (if that makes sense)?

In NC the insurance can be in anyone's name, as long as the car in question is on the policy. All they want at the DMV is a current insurance card showing that VIN number on it.

Dad and I went in together on a vehicle just a few months ago. I bought the insurance, he bought the plate.

As for the title, the seller and you will fill out the top third of the title in front of a notary(fedex kinkos has one, $5/signature). You then take the title and your proof of insurance to the DMV(cary is the closest one to NCSU I think). They'll take it from there. A basic plate usually runs around $150.

Alright, so the car has to be added to the policy before the title can be issued. What can you do if you are going to do work on the car, or the car is going to sit for awhile? Also, this car is located 2 hours away, what kind of tag or other object would I use in order to get the car to where I want it?

You can transfer the title to your name at the DMV without buying a license plate. I don't remember how much it would be, probably $20 less. You only need insurance to get a plate.

If you don't transfer the title to your name within X days, there's a penalty when you register it. I waited 10 years once, the penalty was $15.

A trailer or tow-dolly.

Thanks. Why the hell towing the car never popped in my mind is beyond me.
