anyone taken it?

it gives you the knowledge to sit the exam. any other ways I could take a class to prepare for the contracting (general) exam?

That class is ok, I took it several years ago. It is only about the code book and didn't touch anything building wise, just residential. I followed that class up with a J J Johnson Seminar and that gives you all the info you need. http://www.contractorsseminars.com/

You really do need the books if you are going to do the Building GC Test and not Residential. I almost passed it the first time but didn't have the books. Passed easily the second time after borrowing the books from someone. Good luck!
