So, I'm really into scripting games. Last year I came across the San Andreas Multiplayer mod (SAMP) and adopted a server, scripted for it with its scripting utility for about half year. It was fun and I really enjoyed designing rules and turning GTA into a game of my own. This year Multitheft Auto: Death Match came out, which has a lot more potential than SAMP, and the degree of freedom it offers to game designers is just fascinating. For example, using the player render frame event and various player targeting functions to turn GTA into first person view. MTAM uses LUA as its scripting language, so I think it's a good opportunity to learn a new computer language too. I don't have any friends around me who likes making games, but I wonder if anyone here would be interested. I don't aim to make a widely popular server or anything (but that's desirable), I just like designing games as a hobby. Anyone wants to share the experience with me? 4/29/2008 2:05:56 PM |

you should get with my brother ... he and a few friends/partners are making a game right now, and are always looking for people who want to help out.
They are hooked up with steam for future distribution. Game is called Calamity Fuse. 4/29/2008 3:05:34 PM |

^^that sounds really cool, but I doubt I have the time yet to diverge from MTADM.

well samp does suck in many aspects but I had a lot of fun scripting it. I didn't really play the game I scripted though.

Not into GTA on PC, but a friend and I are planning a mod for Team Fortress 2, and there is a small chance that we might recruit one or two others to help us with coding new weapons and shit. We wanted to start on it this summer, but it looks like it'll be the fall until we get started on it for real.
I'm mostly into artwork and design rather than actual coding, so the extent of my programming ability is rather limited, but I'm always curious to see what other people come up with gameplay-wise. 5/15/2008 7:31:48 AM |

team fortress 2 is an FPS, when talking about modding do you mean modding just the map/character/weapon, or modding the gameplay? for the former I don't think you even need programming... just swap out some game data right? 5/18/2008 2:24:15 PM |

well if you make your own weapons you'd have to do some programming there. and there would be minimal coding involved to tell the game to use the custom maps and weapon models i would imagine, but perhaps not with Team Fortress 2. I'm not familiar with how it implements user mods. 5/18/2008 6:38:05 PM |
