So it has started saying that I need to re-calibrate the battery. I tried to do this, but the damn thing dies before calibration can even begin. Is this repairable by buying a new battery?

how old is the battery, has it gotten overly hot recently, and are you following the procedure correctly?

Battery recalibration basically means run the battery completely down to 0% - where it won't even turn on for a second, and then do a full charge. It's supposed to recondition the battery but if you have a Dell 1000...then it's probably time for a new battery anyway.

And yes...a new battery will fix the problem.
