I have an '06 grand prix gxp. I took a trip from MN to MI and the 'low oil level' indicator came on. Brought it to oil change place and it was down 2quarts. I use synthetic oil, and have changed my oil on time (I go by the in-dash computer oil life guague, but average ~ 4k miles per change). Its been about 5k miles since my last change, and I'm worried that burning 2quarts in that amount of time is not normal (especially for a new car).
I'm brining it in to the dealer tomorrow to get the shit checked out as it is still under warranty. Is 2 quarts in this time period at all normal? Service guy I spoke with on the phone said it was, however I think it is jacked up to have to keep a quart of oil in ur trunk in case it burns 2. I have 24k miles on the car, I drove pretty fast on trip home (80 most of the way). I checked coolant when I noticed I was low on oil and it was normal level. Isnt synthetic supposed to last up to 7k miles in some cases? 5/12/2008 11:34:52 PM |

you push the car hard. it's going to burn some oil, what it's designed to do ventilating the crankcase. would you rather have pressure build in the crankcase and ruin your piston walls or blow oil out the dipsitck?
bottom line, drive easier/slower or deal with it. gm has been through the ringer with this on the northstar and the isuzu 3.5 v6. any legal action has been in their favor. if you consider the designs of some engines, it's not such a bad thing. it just means their systems are working right. i mean, you're talking about cars with more than reasonable capacities too. the northstar takes a whopping 8 quarts.
also, make SURE to check the level yourself after you get it changed somewhere. a quart here, half quart there, is all squirreled away for their own personal stash. 5/13/2008 4:00:28 AM |

1 qt/2000miles is...not that great. not bad like my old POS that burned a qt in like 400 miles, but still. unless its a rotary engine, or you are running close to redline most of the time, burning oil is bad. 5/13/2008 8:16:45 AM |

its not really a performance engine. 5/13/2008 8:37:11 AM |

My Grand Prix is burnin'. I change with synth every 5k. The low indicator light usually comes in at around 4k.
Of course, mine's a 1998, not an 06. 5/13/2008 10:20:20 AM |
