thanks

downtown? http://www.nissenapartments.com/

The place where I live is a house converted into four 1-bedroom apartments in the West End--it's much cheaper than the high-rise route ($495 compared to $700+). This house and the one next to it are already rented out for next year, though.

Anywhere downtown (4th to 6th streets) or in the West End is pretty awesome. The Nissen Building (^) is super fly. There are a bunch of new swanky places on 4th, and a bunch of historic buildings, too. Check out Gray Court, I think it's recently renovated.

Housing in WS is so ridiculously cheap compared to Raleigh.

I'm not a big fan of Winston-Salem. I used to live about 30 minutes NE of there, and I just never enjoyed having to go there....

Found a job that I'm thinking about applying for and I currently live in Columbia, SC. I've been to W-S several times, but most of that time spent was in the early to mid-90s (other than going to see Tool and State play Wake a few times). Looks like the job would be downtown, so I'm just looking for good areas to live in. Should I live in W-S or commute from another city/town?

I'd just live in northern Davidson County and commute. It isn't a long ride at all up either US-52 or NC-150 to get to Winston Salem, maybe 15 minutes to get from Arcadia/Welcome/etc to Winston proper. Unless things have changed radically it's way cheaper to live out in the county.

Source: grew up there, that's where we lived, it worked out very well and commutes were never bad for the several folks around us that lived in Davidson co. and worked in W-S.

I have several friends that work in Winston but live in Kernersville. I also have a friend that works in Winston but lives in Clemmons. I have 0 friends that both work and live in W-S. Kernersville would probably be the easier commute to downtown W-S, since it's pretty much a straight shot down I-40 Business.

That being said, I've heard there are some pretty cool apartments in downtown W-S, but they're pricey. Gotta be careful in choosing a place to live in downtown Winston though, because it gets pretty ghetto pretty quick.

^ this is true as well. I have also had friends through the years that lived in the Welcome area and worked in W-S, if you are looking to go the rural route.

Yeah, I'm definitely fed up with ghetto after living here in Columbia these past few years. I spent the early part of my youth living in Lexington (from 1989 to 1994), so I am somewhat familiar with the Davidson County area. We went through Welcome several times on our way to W-S, but most of the time was spent scoping out flea markets and antique shops.

Are you looking to rent or buy?

I hear the Waughtown St. area is really nice.

Not sure yet, mostly just getting a feel for the area. I imagine we would probably try to rent at first, then perhaps buy later.

I was totally kidding on the Waughtown St. area btw. I used to sell in that area, and it is the main reason I got my concealed carry permit.

Got the job, so we are moving at the beginning of September! Found an apartment in the Nissen Building on 4th St, and the rent actually isn't as high as some of the other places. Really looking forward to living in a downtown area for once.

^^ very nice. Good call moving there, especially if you got a good deal. They were pre-selling for crazy numbers.
