Those trannys suck, NyM410's started fucking up well before 100,000 miles. And I had another friend who's 626 transmission overheated for no reason apparently other than going over 100mph for an extended amount of time.

I had to replace the trans on my 93 626 then shortly after A framed the hood going about 10 miles an hour.. Definatly did about 2K worth a of damage and 'totalled' the car. 5/13/2008 12:10:42 PM |

I haven't dumped any money into it. The previous owner replaced the transmission on it, not me. Stupid, maybe. But yes, I still bought it. BigBlueRam checked it out and said it was a decent car to buy. Stupid, maybe. But yes, I still bought it.

my 2000 626 tranny needs to be replaced at 80k... f-ing ridiculous I hate that goddamn car now It's been sitting waiting for a new valve body for oh... about 5-6 months now.
Anyway- Most Mazda dealerships and even our family friend mechanics (including my stepdad) don't want to touch them
You're doing more tranny work after it has already been replaced?? I'm assuming it's an automatic-- right? How long ago did you buy it?

and he was right for the most part. i mean i do not know the condition of the car, but if and when they do break down parts are cheap and easy for the most part to replace.

Okay, a little bit more. Beryl Road Automotive and Collision sucks. They told me what I already knew and it took them three days just to take it for a drive; the transmission fucks up going into third and fourth gear. They said it'd need to be rebuilt or replaced, running about $1900. It has 125,000 miles on it and the previous owner rebuilt it at 96,000 miles. The problem looks to be the same as it was judging by the invoice.
Any cheaper suggestions? I may end up going TKE-Teg's route in the end, b/c another $2000 on a car I got for $3200 is shitty. For what it's worth, the tranny rebuild warranty is already dead. Yes I'm low on money, slowback, but I need a car, whether it's this one or another. I looked and for the approx. $2000 rebuild, about half was labor, so if anybody knows someone that charges hugs for labor or something, give me some advice.
By the way, when they rebuilt it, on the invoice it lists an external transmission oil cooler as part of the charges, so maybe it was heat in the first place. 5/15/2008 5:16:50 PM |

If you look at the Mazda 626 forums you'll see that everyone that posts that they installed a larger capacity cooler hasn't had problems since.
I know tranny fluid can get pricey, but the first time mine wouldn't go in gear (right after a 250 mile trip) we flushed it twice and the problem went away. Tried it again when it stopped shifting properly, and it didn't help at all. However, the second time around we discovered that the clutches are simply never fully engaging & so they're constantly slipping.
If yours isn't too too bad, it might be worth trying flushing the tranny fluid & installing a larger cooler now before things get worse. Although, since you're actually having issues from 3rd to 4th and not with it going into gear all together... it sounds more like my current problem and may not help at all.

My 626 tranny died (it was a 1991) at ~165k. Bought the car for 3000, a replacement transmission + labor was quoted at 2500 bucks.

wait, what? i vaguely remember maybe talking to you about it via pm, but i don't recall checking anything out in person?
get a fluid/filter change and have them adjust/tighten the bands. i'm betting that's your issue. possibly a solenoid, or could even be the computer. but do that first. then have a good electrical diagnosis done. if all else fails, dump some lucas in it and roll on until it takes a dump. i've got a ford f350 that was slipping so bad you could hardly drive it. 2 quarts of lucas, and it's gone another 20k miles shifting great as long as you don't abuse it.
