Quote : | " Researchers at Oxford and the University of Exeter in England report in a study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences the first evidence that a child's gender is associated with its mother's diet.
Although gender is genetically determined by whether the father's sperm supplies an X or Y chromosome, a mother's body can favor the development of a male or female embryo. The study shows a link between higher energy intake around the time of conception and the birth of sons. The reason food intake may influence the development of one gender over the other is not fully understood; however, in vitro fertilization studies show that high levels of glucose encourage the growth of male embryos while inhibiting female embryos. The study's data is based on the records of the eating habits before and during early stages of pregnancy of 740 first-time British mothers who did not know the gender of their fetuses.
The researchers analyzed the data, including estimated calorie intake at the time of conception, and found that, among women who ate the most, 56% had sons, compared with 45% who ate the least. Women who had sons were more likely not only to have consumed more calories, but also a higher quantity and wider range of nutrients, including potassium, calcium and vitamins C, E, and B12. A strong correlation existed between those women eating breakfast cereals and those producing sons." |

^ i saw this a few weeks ago...i'm still not sure the research is truly valid (from what i read and what makes sense in my head), but who am i to say so?

are you using "depends" as cause?
Because you should know by now that correlation =/= cause.
I would be more inclined to beleive that the baby being a boy is the cause for the diet.

a researcher from the Max Planck Institute once told me that if your jimmy runs deep you're more likely to have a son on your earlier tries. on later tries, the depth of your jimmy-run matters less.
i don't have a source to cite yet, but this gentleman professes in the field of evolutionary biology, and said he would probably have a paper out on it later in the decade. 5/13/2008 10:39:51 AM |

^ I've seen that too. Though not the part about it only mattering on the first tries. Apparently boy sperm are weaker/lazier than girl sperm. 5/13/2008 10:44:21 AM |

note, the earlier/later correlation was relevant with the same mate. how the mate's vag-piece related to repeated penetrations from the male over time determined how the seed was deposited.
i also remember seeing a show Desmond Morris did on TLC ('The Human Animal), with evidence on when the female got her groove on there was an increased uptake of the seed. when she got her kicks, the uternie walls created a sort of vacumn that actively siphened up the seed. ...note to would be conceivers: make sure she gets hers!5/13/2008 11:06:26 AM |

^ Pirate populations are increasing world wide, mostly due to climate change.
I think there are way to many uncontroled variables in the study. It makes sense (look at lower level verts and inverts), but the study still sounds sketchy. 5/14/2008 1:04:28 AM |

When we were trying to get pregnant, I read a number of different ways that you can favor a boy or a girl.
Eating habits was one way. You can change the pH of the vagina to favor either the heartier slower sperm or the faster swimming fragile sperm. I forget which is male and which is female.
The timing of intercourse vs. ovulation also supposedly favors either a male or female sperm getting to the egg at the right moment.
But all of these ways have to do with which sperm gets there at the right time. This is the first time I have heard about it favoring the development of a particular embryo. So if the embryo isn't the right sex, it is less likely to develop? 5/14/2008 12:57:51 PM |

woooooah now.
doesnt the egg contain an x chromosome. and sperm contains either an x or a y.
therefore it doesnt matter what THE WOMAN eats it should be more concerned about the man's diet.
genetics is my thing. if im wrong about this im gonna feel stupid.

I'm guessing you took quite a few sociology classes. The distinction between sex and gender is a contrived societal idea put forth by weirdos. For nearly all intents and purposes they are identical. The incredibly rare case where you can differentiate the two are in cases where expressed physical gender does not match genetic sex.
Other than that you're just mincing words to give cross dressers and "feminists" something else to get riled up about. 5/15/2008 10:47:07 AM |
