I swear things just keep "disappearing".

Dell Inspiron 9300, Windows XP... when I use the volume up/down button it used to have an on-screen indicator of how high/low the volume was, and if it was muted. It's MIA.

Suggestions?

I think you're talking about a utility that dell probably included, not just the ordinary little speaker icon in the bottom right that XP does

so, go to dell website and search in support for something like that

It was probably the victim of a driver update.

sometimes windows updates disables the windows audio

reenable it by going Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and starting the 'Windows Audio' service

that sounds like a dell provided utility. look on their support site for the application (often comes packaged with a driver) and reinsall it.

control panel - sounds - place volume in taskbar

if your sound doesnt work at all reinstall the driver. and also check the device in the device manager and make sure its enabled. and yeah. check that service too

^ thanks for the taskbar tip :-)

PS - Looks like it disappeared because I took quickset out of the start-up... who knew that was useful

I guess I was too eager to clear all the 84903284 programs out of start-up
