So I have had a credit card with CHASE for a few years.

Every month I pay by phone. I prefer this because it saves me trouble and I don't have to worry about the mail getting lost or whatever...

Last month all of the sudden they say there will be a $9.95 fee for paying by phone.

I was never notified of this new fee, but that is not what makes me angry.

So May 2 I talked to a representative at CHASE and she told me that "the fee would NOT be charged" because I'm in NC and it was a glitch...

I got my statement today, and there is is plain as day "$9.95 EPAY"

So CHASE LIED to me. This make me very angry, I talked to the lady last month for like 10 minutes about this matter.

So I call back today and they are like "sorry but I cannot waive that fee" it is an "unwaivable fee".

How can I cause them trouble? I feel that this is fraud. Plain and simple.

I am going to cancel this card as soon as finish some other credit score sensitive stuff...

I think having a fee to pay your bills is complete bullshit. Everything I pay online/phone from power bill to credit cards has a $5-10 fee. WTF is all that interest for if they want to make money off of my payment processing too? Not to mention its in their favor as well as mine that they get their money the fastest way possible. Why make me have to buy stamps, waste paper on envelopes and checks just to make a payment that might get lost in the mail?

^ just pay from a checking account online and you don't have a fee. Many utility companies charge you a service fee if you pay by credit card because they are charged a fee by the credit card company . Honestly credit cards suck ass, but I do use them only because I get rewards.

maybe pay your balance in full so they don't earn interest off of you?

I don't see how canceling your credit card and lowering your credit score is going to "stick it to chase"

and you said last month they told you there would be a fee...that sounds like a notification to me. And then you get some customer service rep from India that you think they know what's going on?

Airlines charge for you to check bags now, gas is almost $4 a gallon, life sucks, get over it, pay online

You guys seem to be missing what has angered me.

They told me that the fee would NOT be charged.

Then it was charged anyway.

When I brought this to their attention they were not even slightly apologetic.

Its not about paying the fee, its about getting lied to and then having no recourse.

****

Of course $10 is preposterous when I am saving them the money of not processing a check. Complete nonsense.

I don't need to build credit anymore, it's just inconvenient to cancel it right this second because I don't have another that I want to use currently. I don't carry credit card debt so that's not an issue either.

I'm not sure if paying online has a fee or not, I was not with Chase originally and I've not messed with the online account since CHASE ate my card from TD Waterhouse a few years back.

I don't see what is so different about the phone, it is completely automated. Why should online be free and on the phone be $10 ?

Anyway, I'm going to call them up again tonight and see if I get a different answer since apparently it depends who you talk to.

everyone needs to build credit or at least maintain their good level...closing credit cards generally lowers your score

and online payment for chase is free

Maybe it's a hell of a lot easier to maintain a simple online computer program vs whatever they use for phone stuff.

So somehow the last five years it didn't cost them $10 to process by phone, but now in 2008 all of the sudden it got expensive...

Whatever.

CHASE is just turning up the water on the stove and seeing how many frogs will stay in the pot.

More like they're trying to phase out an antiquated system that nobody in 2008 has good reason to use.

It's totally unacceptable that they said they wouldn't charge you and they did, but paying over the phone is just kind of stupid.

^ why is it stupid and/or antiquated? I can do it anywhere even if I don't have internet access. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I think pretty much all of them charge for this unless the collection dept calls you, then its free. Otherwise you should do this online.

^Well that is strange. I have paid this way for a number of years and I never paid a fee. (until last month, and if the CHASE people were at all useful they would have said just do it online, but not a word about that...)

All my bills get withdrawn out of my checking account with a fee.

because gas prices have sky rocketed, it now consumes more gas for them to process your card. /sarcasm

Yeah, my experiences with the company haven't been positive. They do whatever they can to sign you up for their expensive special deals.

As a person who has worked in customer service. . .

Before getting my panties all in a wad, I would call them again. Sometimes things can go very differently if you talk to another customer service representative. Even if they are unable to waive the fee, they may be willing to compensate you in another manner for relaying incorrect information. If the second customer service representative is a problem, ask to speak to someone at a higher level.

And I would like to add that Chase is not as bad as some other credit card companies, but Discover has by far been the best to me.

Have you called to see if they could pull the recorded conversation between you and the CS rep?

That would help.
