I sold something in April and shipped it to the winner. I have a delivery confirmation receipt that says it arrived about 6 days after I shipped it. Yesterday he sends me an email saying he didn't receive it yet.

Now two things are possible:

-he is lying
-or somebody stole it off his porch (or something like that)

what can/should I do here? I still have the confirmation no for delivery, I mean hell you all can see it

Label/Receipt Number: 0307 1790 0000 3730 6673
Status: Delivered

Your item was delivered at 9:53 AM on April 17, 2008 in HERNDON, VA 20171.

There is no way I'm giving this guy $150 or so for an item I shipped. But what would you all do? And yes I do care about the buyer!

Send him a copy of the delivery confirmation. Tell him to take it up with whatever company did the delivery.

thats the entire point of getting the delivery confirmation eh. if it was through paypal, he'll likely file a claim where they'll ask you for proof that you sent it. i believe delivery confirmation is fine for anything under 250 dollar bux in value, else you need a signature.

my favorite was when a guy told me i sent him something broken 1 month AFTER he got it.

thanks guys. I have sold lots on ebay, several thousands now, and this is the first time this has happened. He did pay with PayPal, obviously I have my tracking record. SO if PayPal will give him a refund, I personally won't. I'll contact them.

I mean no way I'm giving up $150 when I shipped it and I know it was delivered

^^ if paypal gives him a refund, you get to as well. only way you'd be protected and paypal would get fucked is if he did a chargeback. they'd protect you and then fight his ass.

true.

bought a NorthFace jacket for my gf for Christmas and it was a FAKE! the lady had like 99.5% feedback so I thought for sure it was legit. Ended up getting my $ back but I was still pissed about it.

my most recent joy was buying a shirt for my friend. came priority mail in 3 days. was really small for the size noted, so i sent it back priority mail to change for a large. took a month cuz he just "hadn't gotten around to processing returns yet." yeah, glad i paid 8 bux for return priority mail shipping when it takes you 4 weeks to get to returns.

most of the time it is fine though.

found this on ebay

Quote :
"What’s the difference between proof of shipment and proof of delivery?

Proof of delivery is acceptable documentation if a buyer files a claim, chargeback, or reversal for either an unauthorized payment or merchandise not received.

Proof of shipment is acceptable documentation if a buyer files a chargeback or reversal for an unauthorized payment.

Here are the specific requirements:

Proof of delivery
You need online tracking information from a shipping company that:

1. Shows the status as delivered.
2. Shows the date of delivery.
3. Includes the recipient’s address, showing at least the city and zip code (or equivalent).
4. For items valued at $250 USD and more, includes proof of the recipient’s signature to confirm delivery.

Proof of shipment
You need a document from a shipping company that:

1. Shows the status as shipped or delivered, or shows a postmark.
2. Shows the date of shipment.
3. Includes the recipient’s address, showing at least the city and zip code (or equivalent).

"

so yeah I'm not worried now.

No kidding. I still sell a little bit...Mostly stuff I need to get rid of that is worth too much to drop off at the thrift store, but it is getting to be such a hassle that I don't need.

I used to think ebay>craigslist but lately the revers has been true. With craigslist you can just meet people and get cash without worrying about scamming and shipping issues. Also you do not have to pay a commission on everything you sell.

I do a lot with craigslist too. Some items make sense to put on ebay though. Well I am going to message this guy and tell him to contact PayPal, not me. Get him off my radar screen of stuff to worry about.

Did you ship to a verified address or whatever?

yeah its verified. And to make sure I don't screw up, I don't write the address on the box, I always copy and paste the address off of PayPal into a word document and print it, then attach it to the box, thus its the same. If I were to write it I might put 123 instead of 132 for example.

If it were not verified I'd be worried. But I'm not.

except you reach a fraction of the market that ebay has and whenever i put something up on CL i get 100 emails that i have to reply to, 1/3 of which actually result in another reply, another 1/100 of which MIGHT actually meet me. CL is too annoying with its false hits.

i totally disagree with that...a) imo a county with wake counties population plus being close to durham and other communities is a big enough market for me...b) you talk about not having a large market but then get 100 emails on your item? and c) wtf, 100 emails...either thats a hyperbole, or you need to put your item on craigslist for more money...my rule is if i get more than like 10 emails the first day i already know i put whatever it was i had up for too cheap

imo craigslist>>>>>>ebay

1) u can still have a large market. i said that it was a tiny fraction of ebays. which is true for most commonly sold items.
2) yes it was a hyperbole. my point was that i get a variety of emails, many of which do not give you a response when you answer questions. those that do may ask to see the item, but then never end up coming or confirming a time/location.

#1 is obvious.
#2 is why i like ebay, because that fee im paying puts them in a contract. you weed out the people that are going to hmmm and haww all day and have no real intention of buying. does this lessen the interest somewhat? sometimes, but at least it takes some of the pain away. additionally you might have ppl go into bidwars without you having to act as a middleman between them (again, less hastle).

Seriously? What did you expect? Just go ahead and assume anything like that is, most likely, a fake. I mean darn, if you get it for $200 LESS than retail - who cares anyway? I would bet she can wear it out and no one knows any difference.

I just remembered a similar incident I had with an eBayer.

I shipped a backpack to some guy who lived in an apartment. I assumed FedEx would take it to the office, but apparently that was an incorrect assumption.

After a week or so the guy was contacting me saying he hasn't received it. My first response was similar to cheerwhiner's. I sent him the tracking number which said it had been delivered. He checked with the office and found that they didn't have it.

I called FedEx to see if they could do anything. While I had them on the phone it dawned on me to have them confirm the address to which they delivered the package. Sure enough, the bitch fat fingered the apartment number when she was typing it into the system. The package went to apartment 73 instead of apartment 43 as I had written it on the shipping label.

My receipt showed I had clearly written 43, so I knew I was in the clear. I still didn't want the guy to get burned. He was anxious to get the pack because he was leaving for a hiking trip in a couple of days. It was obvious that he was a broke kid who couldn't just walk into REI and drop an extra $100 unexpectedly, so his weekend was about to be ruined.

I called the guy and told him what happened. I said I can file a claim with FedEx, but his best bet is just to go knock on the door at apartment 73 and tell them to give him his pack. He went up there and the package was still sitting at the door. The apartment was vacant and the package actually sat there in the hallway for over a week. Lucky bastard!

Anyway, the lesson is that you might want to follow up with the shipper and make sure they didn't drop the ball somehow.

yeah i mean I just assume they weren't going to leave me feedback, I had every right to think they got it (duh delivery confirmation said they got it) so I again I thought this ebay transaction was all taken care of. More than a month later they contact me? For something that much I'd been on it in about 2 weeks

I think false claims and feedback extortion will become more popular now that eBay does not allow sellers to leave negative feedback.

well it was retarded before. i dont sell much, but have a good reputation and around 90 feedback which actually makes it possible to sell things and still appear semi credible to ppl.

if i would have left a neutral feedback in the old system (warranted or not) i likely would have gotten one in return leaving me with a shittier and shittier ranking which would likely make me not covered under paypals seller insurance policy (50+ feedback, 98% or greater rating).

then again, sometimes buyers deserve the negative.

Completely serious.

Turns out the guy might have forgotten to tape up one end of the box so it fell out in transit, but he denies any wrong doing. I'm sceptical of his story since there was tape on both sides when i received the box. I've made a paypal claim.

Funny thing is that I had the part sent to my boyfriend's place in IL. Seller lives in Garner, and has no idea I live in Raleigh. If Paypal sides with him and I am out the money he's gonna get a flaming bag of poo on his doorstep on a regular basis.

I've had this happen a few times. I do delivery confirmation even for cheap stuff, I just build it into my shipping price. I also save the register receipt from the USPS transaction. It has the weight and zip code of where you are sending the item.

If the person claims they didn't get it I scan in both the register receipt and the delivery confirmation receipt (which also has a postmark stamp on it) that usually shuts them up. So far I haven't had to take a hit because their local delivery sucks. I tell them to take it up with their local postmaster / postal inspector.

And I have quit selling on Ebay too and only buy cheap stuff that I can afford to get ripped off (cell phone accessories, cables, etc).

I sell books and newer small items through Amazon Marketplace (you know the "Used" link that shows up below the Amazon price). I sell music through discogs.com . Anything that is a pain to ship goes on CraigsList.
