Being that there's a large selection of writing instruments from fine pens to a standard wooden pencil. There are many preferences when it comes to these implements; what's your favorites when it comes to writing?

My preference to mechanical pencil is the Original Quicker Clicker, they did this thing right with a good balance and feel. The small barrel makes it nimble and isn't cumbersome as the new Quicker Clicker found in most stores.



As for an ink pen goes, I don't find any fault with the Uniball Roller. They're priced cheap, have a small barrel and a durable steel pocket clip. It has a smooth ink flow and fine line.



I know some of the design and art majors might prefer some better pens and pencils, but these do fine for me. So, let's have them.

I was never a big fan of the Quicker Clicker; the barrel-mounted click always got in my way. I rarely have occasion to use pencils anymore, but my favorite is probably the Sanford Technician II in 0.5 mm:

Eventually the rubber grip gets loose, which is annoying, but about the only other one I reliably like is the Pentel P205 Sharp, which has a crappy eraser. (I am a fan of the drafting-type pencils.) So you win some, you lose some.

For pens I am quite partial to the Pilot Precise V5 rollerball.

Inexpensive, good feel, write very reliably. Previously I had used the Uni-ball Micro Deluxe or the Uni-Ball Vision, and those will still do, but I prefer the V5 to just about anything else.

^2nd pen listed, the G2, the (bic?) atlantis, and, oddly enough, some of my bf's company pens. Instead of finding out what they are and buying some, I just asked him for a handful.

They write wonderfully, and have a good shape, and the clicking is so gratifying

my dad has several "new" boxes of them, since they were throwing them out where he worked (they weren't the kind the architects wanted)...i say "new" because i don't think they've made them like that in years, and these are still shrink-wrapped

the Pentel EnerGel Retractable Pen is my favorite pen.. it's write awesome, dries quick and hasn't pissed me off yet haha

The Pilot G2 usually ends up pissing me off, because a lot of ink comes out at a time, and i end up smearing it and they've always ran out of ink pretty fast... maybe i just always buy the messed up ones, but for now i'm happy with my pentel

For cartoon lettering and drawing, I use the Sakura Pigma Micron of various sizes:

The Pilot G2 has quite the cult following; many people find that it's the best pen they've ever used. Whatever the case, those people found that they would prefer their G2's modified.

The Pentel Original Quicker Clicker has been seemingly exhumed from the grave. I bought 5 when I found out about this (free shipping for $20 or more) so I could have a supply for a while even if they stopped making them again (I don't lose my pens/pencils often).

The same problem with the quicker clicker exists with a lot of those more exotic drafting pencils; it takes one bad drop at an awkward angle to bend or otherwise distort the sleeve so that the pencil is now a paperweight. One person has been quoted as saying, "Mechanical pencils are like bras, if you find one you like, you should buy as many as you can because when you manage to break it, they won't make them anymore." I assume that this was a chick stating the facts as they are.

UniBall Jetstream ftw.

Gel rapidly dries, which I personally favor since I'm a lefty and I smear gels as I write across the paper. Plus, people always get confused with the chrome colored tip, thinking that's where the pen is supposed to be, when the cap only needs to be pulled off. It's funny when people twist the cap or try to find a clicker thingy.

I am on the Pilot G-2 boat too. They have a defined click, a good solid clip, and a smooth rubber surface.

never had a problem with G-2 myself. my company pretty much only uses them and puts their logo on um. there are a few colors of ink that don't write properly (green/purple), but the standard blue/red/black work fabu.

^ the Kuru Toga is not a shaker, it rotates the lead as you write, which means the lead has an even point that doesn't snag or break.

I just ordered one and I've been writing with it a few hours and I love it. I got mine from jetpens.com They go in and out of stock a lot, but right now they have most of them, including the 0.3mm size which they didnt have last week when I placed my order.

I also got a pentel graphgear 1000 0.3mm and it's super nice. I wanted a 0.3mm drafting pencil with a retractable tip so it could knock around in a pocket or in my backpack without messing up the tip.



I've been using a pentel Side Fx pencil for a couple years and it's a nice one that you can actually find locally, I see a couple other engineers using them, too. Not all that pretty but it has a big ole eraser which is key:



another one I got from jetpens was a Pilot Presso which is basically the same thing: pack as much lead and eraser in a standard length pencil. I'll see if I like it better than the Side Fx, but it's likely that I'll be using the Kuru Toga the most.





As for ink? I had to ditch the G2 because it was just too smudgy. I found that the pilot neo-gel dries a lot faster, lasts longer, and is cheaper than the G2.
