Had I known I was going to work at UNC for so long, I would have bought closer. Costing about $350 a month to commute in gas alone. Turns out a neighbor one block down also works near me and we both have the same hours. I found her through sharetheridenc.com. How many others out there are electing to car pool?

I can afford the gas, but right now I am operating more on the principle of the matter rather than straight economics. Although I get a discounted parking pass (currently costs me $700 a year) and reduced maintence fees on my car from not driving it so much, so it amounts to more than half the gas savings.

I signed up for sharetheridenc.org but the few people that live near me and work near me don't respond to any emails.

I wish I could find someone to carpool with!

Live off of morrisville pkwy and work in durham off of Duke st (NCMLS).

I can afford the gas, but would rather not pay it, and its more the principal of the matter.

there is only one person that i work with that i could car pool with but her vehicle isnt really reliable as i have been taking to and from work for the past week.

she fnly got her car back today and never even offered gas money
not that i would take it since she is a single mom of two but come on...at least offer since its putting me in the car an extra 20 minutes a day.

^ She should have given money. its common sense. But if she were strapped from repairs, then you did a good deed to help her out. You might suggest driving her to work everyday, but she will pay half your gas and a little extra for car maintenance.

Megan,

I had the same problem initially. In fact, one guy was actually a little rude to me when I sent him an email. I felt like I was being treated like some telemarketer for responding to the ad that he had placed.

The problem with that website is that it doesnt show you when the ad was posted. I happened to place my ad, then she placed her ad the day after.

If you dont already, go in weekely and re-run your searches.

I have been noticing the TTA buses are filling up. Only a matter of time before more and more are carpooling.

Man, me and my woman car-pooled for like a year and a half, but she just got a new job last month. It was great; she'd drive in the mornings (I'd read the comics in the car), and I'd drive in the afternoons. Half as many gas fillups.

I need to look at that sharetherice site, might be good.

My roommate and I carpool since we both work in durham. Sometimes its a bitch getting to work on time or leaving on time, but its worth the gas savings and I don't have to put as many miles on my car. We split it by week.

When I worked in Rocky Mount, I carpooled until my coworker had his hours changed.

Now I work in downtown Raleigh & I carpool with my wife, as she works 2 blocks away. Unfortunately though neither of us can get a parking space though work.

free shuttle to work ftmfw... unless I need to work late... then it's the MBTA to the rescue...

a 1:15 minute commute isn't NEARLY as bad when your not driving and can just mindlessly zone out the entire time...

(I live in Boston {well Cambridge really} and commute to Lexington, MA)

I'd love to find someone to commute with.

I live in Holly Springs and work in Durham (Duke Hospital).

Only problem is that I don't always work 8-5.

I don't carpool, but I did start working from home two days a week to save gas. I have also adjusted my driving a little. I used to roll ~85MPH to RTP, but now I try to keep it around 70. I think it makes about a 1000 RPM difference which should save quite a bit of gas.

And this week I'm working from the sofa in a beach condo.

I've been wanting to, but my erratic hours pretty much guarantee that I can't carpool.

but i'll be <4 miles away from work in a few weeks, so that'll help a lot.

I usually re-check the share the ride site every week or so to see if anyone new has been added to my list, but it hasn't changed yet.

my hours are extremely flexible, so i've been toying with the idea of working a 4 day work week instead of a 5 and cutting out two of my commutes all together....

that, and i've also thought about working 7 to 3, instead of 8-4. Days that i've left Durham by 3, the traffic on the durham freeway and I-40 are much more tolerable.

It's really the stop and go crap in the afternoons that KILLS my gas mileage... ugh.

lol, I might have to learn to ride on the back of a bike. even with 50mpg, if you take 2 might as well take the car.

You pay $700/year for parking? Shiiiit. That's ridiculous. I know parking is a bigger deal over at UNC, but at State the only permits that cost more than $400/year are the super-premium spaces that usually only go to deans/high-level administrators/Important People. I pay $312/year for a C permit.

I have a class every Tuesday night and I am currently waiting on one of my classmates(and future co-worker) to arrive so we can carpool to Garner to pick up our third classmate and head to Smithfield for our night class. Instead of driving to 6 classes, I will only drive 2 times! We have discussed carpooling to work next year since we both live on the same route. I am hoping we work it out so we can.

I have a feeling company trucks are going to get reeled in. My friend has an F-150 for his company truck and he thinks they are going to put him some strong limits really soon.

In any event, I started my car pooling next Tuesday. I have a really sweet deal, because this person wants to drive every day. I am going to give her 15% ontop of my gas split for maintenance, but even with $4 gas, that amounts to less than $100 a month to and from work (currently over $200). its been a long time since I have spent so little to commute to work.

to make matters worse, the parking cost goes up depending on your pay. The more you make, the more you pay for parking...

i work at wyeth pharma and they do vanpooling. it's superawesome. i just have to drive to the large parking lot, get in a van with all my other coworkers and that's it. i use that time to read or play video games. oh how i've wanted to do this forever.

I doubt it since I work for a contractor. We have already started increasing our hourly rates and our estimating rates to pass our costs on to our clients.

I drive a V8 F-150 as well, but in the situation I am in, it is one of the most fuel efficient vehicles in the company. We burn about 1200 gallons of Off-road Diesel a day in the heavy equipment.

The cost of me driving 600-800 miles a week is negligible comparatively. I cannot do my job unless I visit the sites daily.

On the plus side, my wife and I only have to maintain 1 car...and we live about 8 miles from her work.
