... but is it from the fires at the beach or the Kenly tire fire?

I guess it's the beach fires...

I saw a huge plume of smoke today and I've been smelling it for a couple of days, but we are a long way from any of the ongoing fires. As dry as it is, you'll probably see more.

I thought something was wrong with my car because of the smell and because it just overheated yesterday. Then I saw the smoke when I left the house and thought maybe there was a small fire nearby. But then I got halfway to work and still saw it so it made me think it was fog. I was afraid to ask people at work for fear of looking like a retard if it was actually my car.

I didn't notice anything this morning but that smell is probably burning peat moss. The moss is why the fire keeps burning so rapidly out there, it's all that's out there and it's all through the soil.

a cold front came through yesterday afternoon, so now the winds are coming out of the NE. the fire in hyde/washington/tyrrell counties, the Evans Road Fire, is what you are smelling. check out http://www.inciweb.org/incident/1293/ for information on it, including aerial imagery of the smoke plume blowing this way.

while the organic soils in that area are what is making it difficult to contain the fire, the vegetation is also burning. you're not smelling peat moss. you're smelling smoke from fire.

also from the fire, fire dust devils (or fire whirls). pictures can be seen in the photography section on inciweb.

When I left home this morning I drove a lap around the circle in my neighborhood to make sure a house wasn't on fire because I smelled smoke and it was hazy. Then 5 minutes later someone on the radio mentioned how it would be a sunny day, but hazy "because of the smoke from the wildfires" and it all made sense.

It's so nasty here in Greenville! Couldn't breathe walking from my car to the office.

I heard on the radio that they're expecting this smoke to reach Winston-Salem.

Now
Due to light surface winds from the east and northeast... areas of smoke from a large wildfire over coastal North Carolina have spread westward into portions of central North Carolina this morning. While visibilities have not been particularly low... from one and a half miles to five miles at most reporting sites... the smoke may be more dense in some spots. County officials report that the smoke is not very dense but that the smell of the smoke is very strong. The very Young... the elderly... and people with respiratory difficulties should remain indoors as much as possible through mid morning... when the smoke is expected to thin out."

" Special Weather Statement

Statement as of 11:39 AM EDT on June 12, 2008

... Areas of dense smoke and haze will affect portions of central
North Carolina through the day today...

Easterly low level winds have allowed smoke associated with the
large wildfire in eastern North Carolina to move westward into
portions of central North Carolina. Reduced visibilities in smoke
and haze are expected to continue through the day today into
tonight. Although visibilities in smoke and haze will generally
be above 3 miles... some locations may see visibilities drop below
1 mile... and potentially as low as a quarter to half mile...
particularly in the coastal plain across Johnston... Wayne and
Sampson counties.

Conditions may worsen tonight as winds become calm and the
nocturnal inversion sets up. Locations along and east of
Interstate 95 are more likely to experience adverse conditions in
smoke and haze tonight.

People with respiratory disease such as asthma should avoid
prolonged outdoor exertion today. Everyone else... especially
children... should limit prolonged outdoor exertion."

the inside of my house and my office smells like smoke (in rocky mount). i've been keeping the car on recirculate so hopefully it doesn't become permanent.

Fumbler's work truck smells yucky...old woods fire smoke and that diesel/gas mixture they use to start fires.

" Dense Smoke Advisory

Statement as of 3:59 PM EDT on June 12, 2008

... Dense smoke advisory in effect until 11 am EDT Friday...

The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a dense smoke
advisory... which is in effect until 11 am EDT Friday.

Easterly low level winds have allowed dense smoke associated with
the large wildfire in eastern North Carolina to move westward into
portions of central North Carolina. Reduced visibilities of a mile
or less due smoke are expected to continue overnight and well into
Friday. Visibilities in some locations overnight may be reduced to
a quarter mile or less overnight posing a significant hazard to
motorists.

A dense smoke advisory means that widespread smoke is expected to
significantly limit visibilities across the advisory area. If
driving... slow down... use your low beam headlights... and leave
plenty of distance ahead of you in case a sudden stop is needed.

Persons with respiratory sensitivity or cardio-vascular illnesses
should remain indoors. It is advised that everyone limit time
spent outdoors due to the poor air quality."

so does anybody want to sign a letter or something i could send to the governor to ask that the state starts paying our foresters for their overtime again? they're working 16+ hour days, including weekends, and not making any more than they do when they're sitting in their offices (which isn't much anyway). they used to be paid overtime when on a fire, not anymore thanks to the governor.

^ Considering they probably spend 70% of their normal time just sitting around, not paying overtime is not necessarily all that bad. They probably live to fight fires like this though.

I'd sign.

I actually remarked to Nerdchick today that maybe now that lawmakers have smelled this shit here in Raleigh, they might do something for firefighters.

Good god, would I sign.

I know this is tww so most of you are self centered pricks anyway, but for the one forester I can speak for, he works overtime at the office on a regular basis then brings his management plans home to work on until late. he works on them on weekends too. they are under-funded and short staffed like most state agencies.

there are several ncdfr (and state) employees who take advantage of their position and of those who are willing to help pick up the slack bc its the right thing to do. they don't deserve it.

but for those who work their asses off, who are promised raises that they never receive, and whose overtime pay they don't receive anymore along with the fact that they have too much work to do to use their comp time...which they wouldn't be paid for like they're supposed to be...they deserve it. when chris does try to use his comp time he just stays at home and works on plans anyway bc he can't afford to get behind.
