This is pretty stupid. Lying to a bunch of teenagers and playing with their emotions is certainly not going to get them to do (or not do) what you want...

Edit: I see the typo in the thread title

Now the question is, have these kids actually learned any lesson on drinking and driving?

No they learned that adults are pricks,

I would liek to see what would happen if ia kid pulled that stunt.

Bring in cookies to class

Then tell the students they were poisoned

The lesson dont take food from strangers!

Go into the classroom and open up with a gun with blanks,

lesson dont let peopel bring guns to school

The witch hunt against underage drinking has gotten out of hand in this country. Somehow MADD has made kids drinking to be analogous to drinking and driving. From my experience the underage crowd is more responsible about this then people 21+. Before I was 21 someone was always volunteering to DD and kids were paranoid as shit about getting caught. After 21 i know a lot more peeps who'll go to the bar and figure they are not drunk and good to drive after a few shots. This is not just college students but people i know as professionals in various fields who joke about going out to drink then they drove back.

Shit, there's an REU chick here who says that since the drive from downtown to the dorms (where we live) its fine to drive drunk and we are fine without a DD.

I'm all

I've said it before, I'll say it again.
Lying to people to make them not do something, backfires HORRIBLY the minute they figure out you lied.

It applies to drugs, it applies to this, it applies to just about EVERYTHING.

And agree with the statement about MADD. It's not mothers against drunk driving anymore, it's mothers against drinking. I read somewhere that some of the founding members have left because it's gone so much further than the original goal.

But really, agreed with the statement above, all this teaches kids is
1. everyone has an agenda (maybe not a bad lesson)
2. Authorities ARE liars and pricks. Including cops, and teachers, and people you are supposed to be able to believe what they say at least to some degree.
3. Authorities DONT care about how you feel or what you think, only that YOU obey THEIR rules.

Admittedly I'm well past my teen years and out of college and still think all these things are true, but I dont think they're right.

Quote :
"In 2002, MADD announced an "Eight-Point Plan". This comprised:

1. Resuscitate the nation's efforts to prevent impaired driving.
2. Increase driving while intoxicated (DWI)/driving under the influence (DUI) enforcement, especially the use of frequent, highly publicized sobriety checkpoints.
3. Enact primary enforcement seat belt laws in all states.
4. Create tougher, more comprehensive sanctions geared toward higher-risk drivers.
5. Develop a dedicated National Traffic Safety Fund.
6. Reduce underage drinking.
7. Increase beer excise taxes to the same level as those for spirits.
8. Reinvigorate court monitoring programs.[5]

One of MADD Canada’s top priorities is to reduce the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) down to .05%. It has drafted proposed legislation to this end and is actively promoting its passage. [6]"

0.05 is fucking ridiculous. I would be willing to bet more people are killed by sleeping/cell phone talking/cd-changing drivers then people with a BAC in the 0.5-0.1 range.

[Edited on June 14, 2008 at 11:04 AM. Reason : seems like that would solve like all problems involving alchol and driving]

because of the economics. Not only does the device have a cost but you would also have to pay to get it calibrated.

I guess you could also ask why car companies to put in speed limiters that will not exceed 80 since no state in teh US has a speed limit above such.
