my husband has been on it twice - he was smoking a pack a day before he began on it - he stayed on the pills for 4-5 mths and he decreased his smoking but never stopped (probably got down to a half a pack a day) - he started the nicotrol inhalers and used those instead of smoking, then got addicted to the nicotrol inhalers (stayed on them for like 6 mths while on the chantix) - so he stopped the inhalers for like 3 days and started back smoking, 2 mths later, his doctor put him back on the chantix at a double dose and it didnt help - hes now smoking 2-3 pks a day - the shit sucks unless you have the will to just quit cold turkey, and his nerves wouldnt allow him to do it 6/14/2008 9:16:26 PM |

i dont understand how anyone has the time to smoke 60 cigs a day. does he just sit around all day at home?
if it takes 3 minutes to smoke one (which is fairly fast), it takes 3 hours to smoke 3 packs a day.6/14/2008 9:22:38 PM |

i wouldnt call it expensive. even without insurance its like 120 or so, which is about the same as smoking a pack a day for a month.

i can maybe understand on the weekend if your out drinking all day, but 3 packs daily?
i wish i had that kind of time.
even if you're smoking when driving, or outside, or at home, 3 hours of smoking is quite a bit considering how anti-smoking the country is now. you have to go out of your way to smoke now (unless youre at home).

I know one guy who was on it, and he said it did make him depressed. He decided to go off it two weeks early because he didn't feel like he would go back to smoking and he was firmly committed to having to go back on it again if he cheated. He said the fear of going back on it was enough to keep him from smoking even once in a while. So it worked, and he's happy for that, but he hated the process. 6/14/2008 10:05:34 PM |

I'll start by saying I never wanted to stop smoking for a second - - loved it, regardless of health risks, nasty breath, ugly comments, trashy look, etc.
Became more necessary to quit, and I (not expecting results) started Chantix... it's like my lil miracle drug... the only thing to ever make me not want to smoke - and quite frankly, find it vile. (To most people it already is; I've smoked for 12 years....)
Started Chantix, and was down to two per day the first week. Stomach turned into a big mess when I went to the 1mg from the 0.5.... Now I just split them in half and continue taking 0.5.... if it works, and the heavier dose makes me sick - why mess with a good thing? 6/15/2008 12:18:08 AM |

You have no idea how many people have said that to me.... Most people look at me as if I killed their first born if they see me smoking. (We'll leave alone the pleas from my Parents, Siblings, Friends, CEO, VP, etc - begging me to quit)
Hence, then I turned into a closet smoker b/c I was ashamed (and it was stupid) and realized it's really dumb to do something you're ashamed of. Duh 6/15/2008 12:24:00 AM |

in a million years, i never would've imagined you to be a smoker!

i've never been a smoker--i've probably smoked about 2 packs of cigarettes and a half dozen cigars in my entire life, mostly while doing stuff outdoors.
what's funny, though, is that i like the smell of cigarette smoke. not the stale, went to the bar last night smell, but the smell of walking past someone smoking.
I think it's because I grew up in NC, then haven't been around much cigarette smoke in the other places I've lived.
I guess I'll smell it all I want pretty soon when I move back! 6/15/2008 12:40:04 AM |

I worked in a pharmacy as a technician for a couple years. All the people we ever had that were on Chantix said it helped them a lot. Most quit. I'm not sure about the bitch tendencies, but it is really easy to take and usually comes as a starter kits with refills for the continuing packs. They are dose packs so they are easy to take. I think like 56 pills for 28 days or smthg like that. GOod luck.
Just call a local pharmacist and ask them. I'm sure you can find their prescribing information on the Chantix website as well.

It had the same effect on my girlfriend. She sucessfully quit and for some reason I will never understand started back later.
I don't think it is the chantix that is making our women psycho though I think it is being cut completely off of the nicotine cold turkey. Chantix blocks the nicotine from reaching the pleasure receptors in your brain, effectively you are smoking but your body does not know.
After a few weeks of your brain not getting any nicotine but you still smoking your body does not make the association that cigarettes=nicotine anymore and you can put them down. When my gf was taking this stuff she said that cigarettes stunk and she hated to be around them......
Once she smoked a couple of cigarettes off the medicine it was all over. 6/15/2008 10:59:28 AM |

It took me a couple of months. The doctor told me they want you to take it for like 6 months or something, but that it wasn't necessary. It was pretty cool because you are supposed to keep smoking for a week after you start taking the meds, and yeah, for me the desire to smoke just kinda went away. I didn't notice any side effects at all, but it does mess with your brain, so maybe they are possible.6/15/2008 11:46:02 AM |
