pretty much the best place you don't know about
korean food, on hillsborough st. with the blue awning (it's upstairs)
for the American, start with the Beef Bugogi or if you're down with the super spice, Pork Bugogi
best white rice around (seriously)
and over time, learn to love the pickled radish and cucumbers (I'm like a baby about "weird food", but over time, this stuff has become an integral part of the meal)
I eat there at least twice a week.

I read it as Wawa at first, too..
I hated that place the first 6 months I lived in MD because of the name, but then some locals made me understand how incredible it is. It's basically like On the Run but even more badass 6/20/2008 8:24:54 PM |

When I was at State I used to go to Waba at least once a week for lunch during one of my mid-day breaks between classes. You get a lot of food for the money. It was always a must stop place on the Hillsborough Hike b/c of all the room and that they had cool Korean music videos projected on a big screen.

it's a little over 6 bucks for the "meal + tax"
excellent EXCELLENT food
it basically tastes home cooked (hint... little old korean lady in the kitchen... for real) 6/20/2008 10:35:34 PM |

meh, their food is okay unless something has changed since the last time I was there (2 years ago by now). I used to think it was really good until I went to Korea and realized what Korean food is supposed to taste like. 6/21/2008 8:48:59 AM |

that's like going to mexico and having food down there and then being like "OMFG I WILL NEVER EAT THE 'MEXICAN' THEY SERVE HERE AGAIN!"
even though our "mexican" is a lot better than real mexican. 6/21/2008 9:17:01 AM |

I didn't say I would never eat it again, it just went from being pretty good to so so in my book. There's a place on Chatham St. though that has some awesome Korean food. I think it's called Korean Garden. 6/21/2008 9:34:05 AM |

I like gettng the lunch box. You get two tiny rolled up omelettes, chap-chae (cold noodles with vegetables), radish and cucumber kimchi, rice and beef bulgogi. It's $6.39 after tax. 6/21/2008 1:02:20 PM |

Also read it "Wawa"
I've eaten there a few times, although it seems strange without the BBQ and pool tables. 6/22/2008 1:47:15 AM |

Its like fast food korean food for the most part.
Go to Asai (sp?) over across from cary town center if you want some really good korean, or korean garden.
They both have really good "home cooked" kinds of korean food. Asai has the best kimchi IMO.
I went to WABA a few times, and it was pretty decent considering I could walk when on campus. BUT, compared to a more expensive korean place, it just doesnt cut it in terms of quality. 6/23/2008 11:14:57 AM |

Having seen this thread, I decided to go there for lunch. Having forgotten the "if you're down with the super spice" warning, I ordered the Pork Bugogi. It was tasty...and indeed, it was spicy. Good though. I think I will have to sample some more of their dishes, but so far so good. 6/24/2008 4:50:04 PM |

Hmm...that sucks that they stopped projecting the Korean music videos and tv shows. I just know that when I'd get the chicken teriyaki and one of the beef dishes, they'd give me a ton of food. I could never finish it. 6/27/2008 8:12:10 PM |

^^Probably
They were doing really poorly the last time I stopped by. The place changed hands about the time the music video's stopped and the food quality/quantity got worse.
It's hard to make korean food cheap/good (meat dishes), the vegetarian/vegetable dishes are super cheap and easy. Of course customer volume would drive the prices down, but that didn't happen in this case. That location is shitty. 1/15/2009 11:39:50 PM |
