BAM!

If you qualify for that program (if it's the same one I think it is) while you're still in school they give you like a $17,000 bonus and a $3000 a month stipend. Then, once you graduate, you get like a $68,000 a year job or something plus all the benefits associated with being in the military.

Shit's ridiculous. On the negative side, you do become owned by the military and have to go through a ridiculous background check to get top secret clearance.

depends if she's teaching officers or enlisted. if it's the officers, almost all of them came through ROTC or the Academy, where at the very least, through MA 242 (Calc III), and through PY 208 (Engineering Physics II) is required. also, a Naval Engineering is required for ROTC, and the requirements to graduate from Annapolis are even more strict. West Point and Annapolis, being the Army and Navy and Marine Corps Academies, were originally meant to be primarily engineering schools, as the early nation drew on its officer corps as the innovators, highway builders, etc. - basically, the education of the academies was meant to be practical, and to this day, all Academy graduates will have a good general engineering background, even if they study humanities.

[Edited on June 28, 2008 at 12:06 AM. Reason : if they're enlisted, well, they won't learn too much engineering theory]

According to 2005 Navy figures, Naval Officer commissioning sources are as follows:

USNA: 749
ROTC: 825
OCS: 586
Direct / Other: 1,346

at that last number!

I tell you what though, I'd hate to be a Naval Officer with that many ring-knockers coming out of the USNA every year.

To be a nuke officer you pretty much need a technical degree, so none of the officer students will be engineering noobs. Out of my interview class of 12, everyone was a college grad - no Academy or ROTC people.

But the classes will be focused on Navy reactor technology, which nobody will have learned in school. That's why they have to go to power school to learn it.

"no Academy or ROTC people."

we interviewed during the school year - I interviewed this past November because I was scheduled to graduate in May (that didn't happen - totally different story there)

Interestingly enough, only the department of the Navy (both branches) has that even a spread between Academy, ROTC, and OCS.

Both the USA and the USAF are heavily ROTC, followed by a large OCS crop in the Army.

she got accepted in the the Navy's nuke program. That is extremely competitive, so yes she did do something impressive.

OCS is next, when she graduates, she'll be an Ensign in the US Navy.

After that she'll go to a Navy run school that teaches the Navy's nuclear systems.

After that, and any additional necessary schooling, she'll go out into the fleet and do her job.

So, it is only a first step, but an impressive one.

eh, not always. all sorts of shit in my job is classified, and I can talk about some of it as long as I don't spill specific data and stuff (other parts, not so much...I don't talk about them)

USMC is heavily OCS (and it is a real rat bastard)...by far the largest fraction. I think something like 60-70%, then another 20%ish from ROTC (who still have to go to OCS for 6 weeks), then the remaining 10% from the USNA.
