I just inherited 2 pistols from my grandfather (Pennsylvania)

How do I go about getting them legally registered so I can own them in NC?

Both are from the mid 50s

This sounds like something you'll need to ask the ATF.

you dont need to have the gun "registered". there is no registration at all. just have them ship it from a FFL in Pennsylvania to a FFL here and then go pick it up.

do i have to have it shipped form ffl to ffl? if i just hide it in my suitcase, how woudl i need to have a permit to own the gun. Right now i dont currently have a pistol permit. Im not flying, im driving, if its locked in the trunk, It wont be found

What im asking is if I just drive it back in my locked in trunk suitcase, when I get back to NC what do I need to do?

oh well if you wanna do it that way just keep it and don't say a word

but if you want to go the legal route i believe you need to go through a FFL to transfer it over. personally I would just pack it up and go...

you don't need anything. just go get it, put it in the trunk, and bring it home.

the permit is for purchasing, not owning. also, there is no handgun registration.

the permit is for receiving, not just purchasing

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/statelaws/23rdedition/ncarolina.pdf

14-402 Sale of certain weapons without permit forbidden.
(a) It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation in this State to sell, give away, or
transfer, or to purchase or receive, at any place within this State from any other place within or
without the State any pistol or crossbow unless a license or permit therefor has first been obtained
by the purchaser or receiver from the sheriff of the county in which that purchaser or
receiver resides. It shall be unlawful for any person or persons to receive from any postmaster, postal clerk,
employee in the parcel post department, rural mail carrier, express agent or employee, railroad
agent or employee within the State of North Carolina any pistol or crossbow without having
in his or their possession and without exhibiting at the time of the delivery of the same and to the
person delivering the same the permit from the sheriff as provided in G.S. 14-403. Any person
violating the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.

having said that, I would just hide it in the trunk and bring it home

I would also unload them, not have any ammunition in the car and dissable them in some way.
If they are revolvers open the cylinder and put a cable tie through the barrel.

he's not receiving it in NC. what does NC law have to do with what goes down in PA?

if he really wants to be legal, he may need to check PA law.

Notice that says it's illegal for him to receive a firearm that's from "within or without" the state of NC. So more or less when he gets the firearm shipped here legally by a dealer, he will have to present permits to pick up the weapons.

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#b

What's required to get the firearm LEGALLY across state lines:

Quote :
"(B3) May an unlicensed person obtain a firearm from an out-of-State source if the person arranges to obtain the firearm through a licensed dealer in the purchaser’s own State? [Back]

A person not licensed under the GCA and not prohibited from acquiring firearms may purchase a firearm from an out-of-State source and obtain the firearm if an arrangement is made with a licensed dealer in the purchaser's State of residence for the purchaser to obtain the firearm from the dealer.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and 922(b)(3)]"

So basically the thing about the FFL's is right, and you should probably ask them, while trying to find somebody to help set up the deal, about whether a permit is required to pick it up. I'm pretty sure the answer as yes, so you might as well apply for them.

If you want to be absolutely legal, when you get home go to the sheriffs office(maybe somewhere else in Wake county, I don't know) and apply for two pistol permits, $5 each. You're basically registering yourself, not the pistols. When you get the permits, throw them away.

As for transporting them, I'd just hide 'em in the trunk and not speed too much.

^that is not required. those permits are to take possession of a firearm in NC.

he may need such a permit in PA, but NC law has nothing against taking possession of a firearm in another state.

NC does not require you to inform them that you possess a firearm. if you move here from another state they don't need to know and if you get it in another state (as in the OP's case) they don't have to know.

[Edited on June 27, 2008 at 2:42 PM. Reason : just unneccessary]

[Edited on June 27, 2008 at 2:43 PM. Reason : ccw is a different story, but i think he understands that]

I inherited a walther ppk in mint condition that has never been shot (but oiled often).

Its beautiful. I am going to go play james bond at the shooting range sometime this summer.

I just sorta took it home. My grandmother handed me a box of random shiz and I didn't know what I had. I geeked out when I found that, though.

I've got one.

WATCH YOUR THUMB! THE SLIDE IS LOW AND WILL TAKE A CHUNK OF SKIN OFF IF YOU DON'T KEEP YOUR THUMB AS LOW AS POSSIBLE.
