Tyson Gay just ran a 9.68 in the 100m, fastest time ever, too bad they aren't giving him the record because the wind was blowing.

Don't know but apparently wind can make you run faster, they should take into account what direction it is blowing, I mean if he was running into it or it was a crosswind then shouldnt he get extra time added? lol 6/29/2008 8:06:23 PM |

Apparently? Don't you think you would run faster if you had a 10 m/s wind pushing you? And on the flip side, it can [of course] make you run slower if you are running into it.

Uh, WTF? Because they lift to build muscle? You can't just have big muscly thighs and skinny arms, you know? Sprinting depends on muscle power, not on lung/heart power, so they lift like crazy, just like bodybuilders do. And if you lift, you have to lift for and develop every part, not just one part of your body.
This really interests me. I have been following 100 m ever since the Canadian, Ben Johnson, ran a 9.78 at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, but was disqualified later after he tested positive for testosterone use. I think at that time the record belonged to Carl Lewis, and I believe it was 9.92. Been following the 200 m and the long jump since then as well. But damn, y'all asked some silly ass questions that any joe_schmoe could answer without much knowledge at all!

Plus arm movement is just as important in sprinting as leg movement.
Also, he already set the world record yesterday with a 9.77, so he only would've broken his own record with the 9.68 today. 6/29/2008 8:47:11 PM |

Wind faster than 2 m/s [obviously in the direction of the run] disqualifies any records set. That's the rule.
Tyson Gay ran in 9.68 sec with a wind of 4.1 m/s. Some guy ran a 9.69 sec 100 m sprint in the mid-90s with a 5 m/s wind, and you don't see that being quoted as the world record, do you? But yes, Tyson's time of 9.68 is the fastest under any conditions. I don't know if the Guinness Book of World Records and other recording bodies have that category or not, but if they do, his name will be there.
The current world record is 9.72 sec by Usian Bolt, a Jamaican dude. Before that it was Asafa Powell, also Jamaican, at 9.74 sec.
Did you know that altitude also factors into records? Beyond a certain critical altitude, records are not counted.
BTW, how come th women's record of 10.49 sec by Florence Griffith Joyner (1988) has not been broken yet? And same with the long jump... set by Bob Beamon in the 1920s or something, at 8.9+ meters. Actually, that was broken in the last decade, I think by [some] Powell... but still, why are those 2 resistant to being broken? And same with 200 m and 400 m, both held by Michael Johnson, in themid 90s I believe. 6/29/2008 9:35:50 PM |

It's certainly possible that the best athletes of all-time in those particular events lived 80 years ago. Maybe it'll just take someone even more special than them to break those records.
Michael Johnson was a beast in the 400. I'm pretty sure he broke that record at the 96 Olympics in Atlanta and I'm pretty sure I remember him doing it by a lot. 6/29/2008 9:42:30 PM |

Yup, Michael Johnson broke the 200m and 400m records in 1996 at Atlanta.
He truly was a beast. The 200m record he broke was a long-standing record from 1979. Michael's time is 19.32 sec, which is 9.66 sec x2!
But the thing I remember and liked best about him was his running style. He ran with a totally upright torso [ ]. In fact, if you look at the pictures of him in a race with others, you will scratch your head.
BTW, the women's 200 m record is also by Florence Griffith Joyner from 1988. 6/29/2008 9:54:40 PM |

since this thread was about sprinting, i assumed "competitions" as said by you referred to sprinting competitions.
and the "random altitude-based sport" is the long jump and the high jump. maybe sprinting as well (lower force of gravity --> run faster).
BTW, where else would these (wind speed, altitude) things matter? you think wind speed would affect boxing? football? volleyball? hockey? and no, as i said, you don't have to be an expert... just exercise some common sense. 6/29/2008 10:31:18 PM |

I think you missed his point. He understood that they took into account that if the wind was at their backs then they would call it "wind-aided."
He was just saying that they should think about subtracting a hundredth or two if the wind is going against them too.

^^^, ^
no it is not dumb. of course wind speed would affect the running in footbal, field hockey, etc... but not so much as to change the nature of the whole game. you run in both directions, and running is just one aspect of the game. there is no way to prove this, but a wind speed of 3 or 4 or 5 m/s would not affect the outcome of the whole MATCH, which lasts a damn lot of time.
but in sprinting... running is all you are doing, and just for a few sec. so of course they take wind speed into account.
^^

As evidenced by some of the stories in the Sports World of late there are some overly sensitive folks out there. One of those groups of people happen to be the Christian news network One News Now who apparently have a filter that changes the word "Gay" to "Homosexual". Obviously it does it for people who have the name Gay, like new 100-meter World Record holder Tyson Gay, and thus gives us the best headline ever....
The craziest part of the whole thing is that when you click on the story it links to the AP version with the correct version of the runner's name. Too funny and it might be time to update your homosexual editing software, One News Now.

Usain "Lightinign" Bolt, wins gold with 9.69 sec, breaks his own world record of 9.72 sec.
He was waaaay ahead of everybody else. The 2nd place dude clocked 9.89 sec, which means he was almost 2.5 meters behind Bolt That's the largest margin of victory in the Olympic 100 m sprint in the past 40 years!
But if you think that's great, consider this:
Quote : | "Even though his left shoelace was dangling, the knot undone. Even though he skidded out of the starting blocks with the seventh-slowest reaction time in the eight-man final." |
DAMN
Imagine if he had the fastest or 2nd fastest reaction time... he could have gone as low as 9.59 sec, or lower!
Asafa Powell, the other Jamaican, who held the world record before Bolt till just a few months back, came in 5th. And Tyson Gay, who ran the 9.68 run with a headwind of 4 m/s just a couple of months back, couldn't even make the finals, and came in 5th in the semis.
Here is a really good and funny read... read it even if you don't care much about the 100 m sprint:
http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/track_field/news;_ylt=ApQ9aXgUyJ3h0jCDJnf7F43Q1Zl4?slug=ap-ath-trackandfield
Oh and the dude is 6 foot 5 inches tall!
