More like, Obamas ability to pander
It's just another of several issues that he has changed his position on since securing the nomination. By my count, he's changed his stance on NAFTA, gun control, the death penalty, campaign finance, FISA, and town-hall debates all in the past month.
I don't think you should celebrate the fact that he has altered his message so transparently in preparation for the general election. 7/5/2008 8:23:52 PM |

NAFTA- i'm pretty sure we are not gonna get rid of this thing...i'm guessing we might tweak it some but thats about it...dont know what his position is really, dont really care gun control- this is one of those things i could care less about, cause it doesnt affect me...dont care to know his stance cause i dont really care about the issue the death penalty- death penalty is kinda like abortion for me...if it were illegal it wouldnt affect me, if it were legal it wouldnt affect me...dont really know what his stance is campaign finance- dont care about campaign finance...just seems like one of those things that people talk about but doesnt really matter in the long scheme of things FISA- doesnt affect me so i could care less what position he supports town-hall debates- lol yeah i pick my presidents based on doing town hall debates 7/5/2008 8:34:53 PM |

Does anyone actually believe that Obama is "moving toward the center"? The initial awe associated with Obama's personality seems to be coming to an end, and he's appearing as a weaker candidate, at least from my perspective. I'm starting to have my own doubts about Obama being a shoe-in come November. 7/6/2008 12:09:46 AM |

He hasnt done anything. He has passed two bills in the senate. 2, and impressive ones at that.
S. 2125, A bill to promote relief, security, and democracy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. S. 3757, A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 950 Missouri Avenue in East St. Louis, Illinois, as the "Katherine Dunham Post Office Building."

"Pandering" is more changing your opinion based on who you are talking to than strictly changing your opinion. When you change your mind based on data and what you feel may be best for others, thats just a straight "change" or "compromise".
A better example of "pandering" is opposing Affirmative Action nationwide as a whole, but supporting it in your home state because it is popular. Its a good thing I just made that up, because anyone actually trying to do that might be the biggest panderer since Kerry. 8/4/2008 7:52:30 PM |

Here's one for the books:
Quote : | "CNN
"Drill here, drill now," McCain said Monday.
(CNN) — Presumptive Republican nominee John McCain called Monday for immediate congressional action on the nation’s energy crisis, joining a call by his Republican colleagues for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to call legislators back from their August recess for a special session.
The Arizona senator said he would return to vote on any proposal. McCain has missed Senate votes since April, including several involving major energy measures – one of which, a summer gas tax holiday, was a standard element of his spring stump speech." |

So we've been arguing about energy independence for 30 years now, and the bill at stake wouldn't do jack shit to lower prices for a good 10 years from now, and all of a sudden the difference in 5 weeks is what's going to make-it or break-it? give me a fucking break.
Now nobody like's what the House is doing nowadays, and I think the vast majority of Democrats would be happy to see Pelosi kicked to the curb. That's because the democrats have been holding it up for 30 years. I don't understand how the left in this country has the gall to obstruct any energy progress for decades, then when it finally bites us in the ass, blame it on the current administration. Then, when people bring up solutions, you come up with this "it wouldn't make a difference for ten years" bullshit. I mean, seriously, what is the agenda here? Jessie, you are seeing obama move towards the center bc he needs to to get elected. Its what usually happens during both campaigns. Traditionally we are a center right country, with the parties usually being on the extremes. So they have to say one line while running for the nomination, then another in the general. The real bitch of it is figuring out what they really want to do. In obama's case I think his views are vastly more left than he is now trying to portray, so if that is your thing, i wouldnt worry. 8/5/2008 12:11:42 PM |

Rofl. He had the nomination sewn up early and then disappeared for a month or so while the Dems tried to tear themselves apart at the seams. He couldn't make it back for any votes during this period when he was chillin figuring out which snarky comment he was going to make next?

Regardless, he couldn't even be motivated enough to return to vote on a plan he hatched as part of his pandering to voters to win the nomination and perhaps the general in Nov? Stop making excuses for your hackery.

You mean like how back in 1979, Jimmy Carter said that we need to cap foreign oil imports, increase our usage of solar power, invest in alternatives and public transportation and do little things to cut back on our energy consumption? And then Reagan came in and said FUCK THAT SHIT WE WANT CHEAP OIL BECAUSE WE'RE A NATION OF IGNORANT SELFISH PRICKS WHO ONLY WANT INSTANT GRATIFICATION, LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES BE DAMNED? The only thing most Americans care about with regards to the energy crisis is cheap gas, and whether or not everyone realizes it yet, those days are gone and the longer we keep looking to drill our way out the worse it's going to get. But you know, maybe this all could have been avoided if we'd thought about this thirty years ago instead of forgetting about it as soon as OPEC let up. Oh well.8/5/2008 12:49:13 PM |

Jimmy had some good foresight, but he fell into the same trap that Obama is falling into now: demonizing the oil companies and using anti-market initiatives to try to solve the problem.
Studies have shown that the price caps and windfall profits taxes of the late 70's only created more supply problems, compounding the crisis. But hell, lets try that shit again, right Obama!?! 8/5/2008 1:15:13 PM |

Yes, they are considering more stimulus checks.
Also, The Big O wants give give everyone 1000 bucks to help with the cost of gas, he will fund this by taxing oil companies. hahah. How is this more of a long term plan than McCains gas tax holiday? He was right to call out that stupid plan, but VERY wrong to propose this one.
Funny, obama said he was for the free market, but sure loves to target those oil companies profits. Kinda wierd huh.
