I'm riding a 98 V-star 650 with all stock parts. My ultimate goal is to end up getting a Hypercharger, but from what I have read, this will require something other that factory exhaust. I can't afford to do both at once, So I figured I should start with the exhaust.
So my question is should get new pipes all together or slip-ons. I have seen slip-ons selling for around $300, while I also see some new pipes for around $300 (V&H short shots). From what I have read, new pipes would require a rejetting kit, which would come with the hypercharger, but I can't buy both at the same time. Looks like slip-ons would not need rejetting. Any help/opinions would be appreciated. Thanks 7/6/2008 12:33:46 PM |

you will have to have all three to see any kind of performance increase (hypercharger, jets, and adtermarket exhaust). slip-ons often free up the exhaust enough to require rejetting anyhow, but on some bikes full exhaust is advised due to poor/restricted header design. varies bike-by-bike, i would look on v-star message boards to see what kind of results have people been getting with various setups 7/6/2008 12:49:37 PM |

my neighbor is doing these exact same things to the exact same bike (except his is new).
I don't understand why. It's kinda like ricing out a Civic, in my opinion. 7/6/2008 10:57:50 PM |

they do sound kinda gay stock. im not a big fan of open pipes, but a little growl is adviseable for every cruiser, even if it is a lil 650 7/6/2008 11:22:53 PM |

hell, my old 920 virago sounded nasty with just drilling a few holes in the baffles on the stock mufflers 7/6/2008 11:37:31 PM |

ok, so now I'm thinkin about just getting the V&H short shots and just a K&N air filter. will a more free flowing exhaust hurt or improve MPG? 7/7/2008 10:30:47 AM |

still need to rejet. as far as MPG, it will depend on how you'll ride with the added hp (all 2.5 of them lol) 7/7/2008 11:18:59 AM |
