Dug through some of the recent "best host" threads and the consensus seems to be a dichotomy between Site5 and Dreamhost. I've used them both previously, but the site I was maintaining with Site5 was only live for a few months (campaign season) and I've never tried doing anything advanced with Dreamhost (right now I've got a handle of static HTML pages with text only)
I'm looking at moving the folks at http://www.uncasg.org to a new host -- they're currently paying for a VPS that none of their staff knows how to use, and probably won't know how to use down the road (plus there are silly limits on things like email addresses (capped at 15), etc)
Between the two, which would be the better host if $$ wasn't an issue?
In terms of what we'll be using, either can handle it from what I recall. We'll basically be needing something:
- easy to administer (for years when they don't have a CSC major as President) - PHP5 - can have installed on it: ---- Drupal 6 CMS ---- SGIMS (as a Drupal module) ---- MediaWiki ---- PHPiCalendar ---- phpBB or some other forum package - unlimited (or very, very large) number of email accounts - ability to host multiple sites on the account (e.g. servicenc.org, etc)
So what say ye, Hosting Gods of TWW? 7/7/2008 8:32:17 PM |

i'd go with site5... i've never had anything bad to say about them.
plus, they've got an "unlimited" special now... $5/month gets you "unlimited" space and bandwidth... of course, normal TOS restrictions apply... but still a decent deal.
p.s.: if you'd like any help with this, i'd be more than willing to offer my assistance. ] 7/7/2008 9:43:21 PM |

I still like Dreamhost, but have no experience with Site5. I can create a promo code for more bandwidth, disk space, or free domain registration on Dreamhost if you want one. 7/8/2008 12:57:50 AM |

^ Haha thanks but not sure I'll be able to use it -- UNC General Administration has arcane accounting practices, they don't give us access to any credit cards or anything similar. Essentially we have to call the vendor for an invoice then they send a check...
evan I'd be careful making offers like that, we might just take you up on it 7/9/2008 8:57:33 AM |

^ Can't they just reimburse someone who pays for it themselves? 7/9/2008 12:44:56 PM |

^ I wish. Now they do reimbursements only if it's an "emergency", which also only applies to state-contracted vendors in certain circumstances (e.g. a copy shop for a meeting later that day if a copier breaks down, a hotel room for a meeting that goes longer than expected, etc). If I could get away with it I'd sign up today just so I could start fucking around with stuff now
They've really started cracking down ever since the Easley trips abroad, this guy in Wake Co racking up stuff on a procurement card, and other bad news stories started surfacing... 7/9/2008 6:20:40 PM |
