I am starting at a new brokerage firm Monday and putting a computer in my office that I would like to be able to remote in to from home. I am trying to find a free way of doing this, that is fairly dependable.

Has anyone tried http://www.logmein.com? They have a free solution that should do what I need.

before you do this, check with the firm's IT department to see if this is allowed under the AUP.

a lot of companies (mine included) prohibit you from doing this unless you tunnel it through their VPN (if they have one). if they catch you, it's an HR occurrence and possibly more.

that being said, if they will give you vpn access: do that, install the vpn client on your home PC, and just use remote desktop

if no vpn access but they're cool with you doing remote access: use logmein's stuff or their hamachi product to create your own pseudo-vpn.

They have a wireless connection that anyone can use that I am assuming is VPN.

You have to pay $150 + $50 a year for their antivirus software and accompanying license to use the secured network. (wired or wireless connection)

From what I can tell the only capability I will lose by not being on the secured network is being able to print from my PC. I can do that from a workroom.

This pc is going to be hooked to the open access wireless. I think that is VPN since it does not allow access to any of the company servers, printers, or computers. It is basically just for people who do not want to have their PC checked out and blessed by IT to use the internet in the office.

The only computer policy they had was regarding the secured network (IT checkup and company AV software required) vs. unsecured (open wireless)

Yes, hamachi + RealVNC should do what you need but like Evan said, check with them first. Honestly, you might not even need RealVNC, remote desktop should do what you need and its built into windows.

remote desktop is free and the best. Talk to your IT department. They may have a way for you to access it remotely already.
