I have a pretty nice Lenovo t-61 with vista business on it. I dont know much about computers but I do know that I hate vista. I have XP on my pc and its okay I guess but I'd rather not use it on my laptop. I know there are other operating systems out there and I was thinking about trying something different. I use it for surfing, aim, ms office programs, movies, photos, music on itunes and ruckus, and some software for my guitar processor, etc. Nothing too advanced. Any suggestions? 7/11/2008 9:30:37 AM |

if you want free, go with something like ubuntu...the problem is that there 1.) be a learning curve if you switch to anything but windows, 2.) not all the software you use will necessarily work on a different OS, and 3.) you might be hard-pressed to find drivers that will work on a different OS 7/11/2008 10:30:57 AM |

stick with xp on your laptop too - you'll be disappointed when you have to spend so much more time learning how to do the same things you already know how to do in windows 7/11/2008 10:45:20 AM |

Thanks. I'm willing to put in some effort to learn a new os so that in the end I dont have to put up with bullshit products like Vista and messages that ask me to give permission to run a program I just told it to start up. BTW if anyone knows how to turn that off, it'd be great!
Might sound crazy but could I run Leopard or a Mac os on my Lenovo? 7/11/2008 10:46:02 AM |

before you go through the effort of starting over, check out the vista thread, especially the last couple of pages: message_topic.aspx?topic=500759
you can "fix" the vast majority of stupid things that vista does...i hated vista at beta, but then ended up installing ultimate with SP1 and, really, i can't complain (the 4gb of memory and x64 version helps, too, IMO) 7/11/2008 11:17:27 AM |

sweet, hopefully they'll continue to work out some of the kinks in it. 7/11/2008 11:37:14 AM |

You can turn off UAC, you can turn off Aero, which makes it basically XP +1. 7/11/2008 12:01:16 PM |

yep, google how to turn off UAC and you'll be fine. if you change that and all the "performance options" in system properties to best performance it's really comparable to XP
hopefully you have 2gb of ram at least--you need at least that7/12/2008 12:12:22 PM |

...or play with the big boys.
If that's a newer t61 it should have the guts after you make the tweaks recommended in this thread. If not, PM me...there are some incredibly awesome (unparalleled, actually) features bundled with new Lenovo 'tops to take advantage of.7/15/2008 12:07:03 AM |
