whats going on this weekend that'd be fun to do?

most of my extended family is from there so usually when i visit its not to hang out and do fun things, but i want to go out some and maybe do some fun things instead of the usual family stuff this time around...if there's any good bars you'd recommend, or other things to do besides the obvious Zoo/Balboa Park/Seaworld/Beach/Gaslamp District etc...i'm open to suggestions

the last time i did this was to go to a bullfight when i was younger, and i was with my parents so i was not involved in the logistics

where are you staying?

i generally spend the summer trying to avoid the tourists but you might want to hit the beach (the water is sort of warm?!?) -- can't drink on the beach anywhere in san diego anymore though, so keep that in mind

i think the finals of the over the line tournament are going on this weekend -- i've never played and haven't been in a few years, but it's usually a crazy drunken good time, not a bad way to spend the afternoon:

http://www.ombac.org/over_the_line/

also the horse races at del mar start this week and that's usually a good time

i rarely go out downtown so i don't really have any recommendations for there, i prefer more laid back places with good beer -- there's a great dive bar in south park (hamiltons) if you want to drink good beer and hang out with some locals http://www.hamiltonstavern.com/

speaking of good beer, the stone brewery is a good place to check out but it's all the way up in escondido (inland north county) http://www.stonebrew.com/

there's good mexican in old town, but it's really touristy there -- you can get a good burrito just about anywhere

hanging out in ocean beach (OB) is pretty fun -- it's really laid back and kind of hippyish, but has good food (my favorite fish tacos in town are at south beach, at the end of newport) and good dive bars (sunshine company and pac shores on newport, lucys on voltaire)

sorry this is really scattered, let me know if you want a specific suggestion for anything...

as for mexico, i'd just park and walk over (or take the trolley and walk over) if you just want to go to tijuana and walk around or whatever -- i don't really go to mexico much, but when i do i usually go further south into baja to rosarito or ensenada and camp at the beach, less touristy but it's still mexico...

Silver Fox in PB FTW!

Roberto's taco stands are where we always went for fish tacos and california burritos in Pacific Beach

I also loved going to the Boll Weevil near San Diego Yacht Club after races - great burgers there

I spent most of my time hanging out at bars in PB since that's where I lived. In addition to Silver Fox, we'd frequent PB Bar and Grill and Moondoggies.

God i miss living there

roberta, know of any marketing positions out there?

how is rosarito? it's on the beach right? ive done tijuana before as i said, and it's everythign you would expect it to be...gross, touristy and overpriced (even for mexico)

eh, rosarito's ok -- it's on the beach and definitely waaayyy nicer than tijuana but it's still mexico, when i go down there it's usually so my friends can surf and we otherwise just grill out on the beach and drink cheap mexican beer so i haven't hung out in town much -- if you're going to drive down, you'll need to get mexican insurance (through triple a or you can buy it online, not sure the deal with rental cars), also pretty sure you need your passport to get back over the border these days...

san diego is probably my favorite city. maybe head up to La Jolla and especially Carlsbad while you're there.

Gaslamp district has lots of cool stuff, but I can't think of the names of anything right now. go to Pacific Beach while you're there.

yeah i go like once a year to visit family, but like i said, i always do the standard stuff...was more looking to hang out and hit up some good bars rather than doing "non-local" or family stuff

if you decide to spend any time in la jolla, there's a great happy hour at the crab catcher (it's in la jolla cove, with a view of the water) -- i usually go on thursdays because it's extended until 9p with $5 double martinis (and a bunch of other drink/food specials, oyster shooters, fish tacos, etc)

there's also some great breakfast places in la jolla: harry's (on girard), the coffee cup (on wall), and the cottage (on fay) -- these are all within about 2 blocks of each other

downtown la jolla is sort of a touristy disaster in the summer, but it is beautiful -- there's excellent mexican (and terrificly strong margaritas) at su casa (on la jolla blvd) and then you can stumble basically across the street to this dive bar called the shack for cheap drinks/pool/scary locals... also two of the best-named liquor stores are in la jolla: dick's liquor and liquorbox, hehe

Do you need a passport to get into Mexico now? If you can get to the OTL tournament-do it! Unless you don't like looking at bare boobs and ass all day.... They have a special permit now that allows you to drink on the beach there, too. Go to the Del Mar track if you've never been.

I lived in Carlsbad and Vista and only went to SD every month or so. Where are you staying?

OTL weirds me out as a game

it always seems like it'd be more fun to play than watch

i dont understand the reluctance to travel with a passport

not in your specific case or anyone in this thread for that matter

but i mean, i feel like you just should have a passport...you never know when you'll need to go out of the country, and its so much easier than tracking down all the other bullshit you used to need to go to mexico/canada/bahamas, etc

i have a current passport and ill have it on me going over and back because i dont want to think about it

anyone want pills or cheap liquor?

Uhhh, I was reluctant to travel to Mexico with my DL and $50 cash. I wouldn't want to be carrying a hard-as-hell to replace passport as well.
