7/20/2008 12:51:37 AM
whats the process of getting a bike and your license and everything
7/20/2008 12:52:55 AM
To get a permit, just pass the eye exam and written exam. Only stipulation is that you can't carry passengers. The permit's good for 18 months, you can get your full license any time by passing the riding exam.To get a bike, buy a bike.
7/20/2008 12:54:33 AM
it sure is slow alright im renting a softail in august and im stoked. If you want to avoid having to take the driving portion of the exam at the DMV you can take the drivers course at johnston county community college or at Ray Price. After that go to the DMV and take the test to get the endorsementUnless you dont know how to ride its kinda silly to get the permit though. Its $15 when the endorsement is $1.25 and all you gotta do is take the written exams[Edited on July 20, 2008 at 1:03 AM. Reason : s]
7/20/2008 1:00:58 AM
^^Cant you just renew the permit? I know poeple that have been riding for years on just a permit.
7/20/2008 1:03:12 AM
^^ you have to take the riding test to get the endorsement. if you know how to ride, it's not hard, but especially on a sportbike, i can see how a fairly inexperienced rider could struggle with i (especially the slalom--on a sportbike, at least, you need to be aggressive and go through it fast enough that the bike countersteers properly. if you try to pussyfoot through there slowly, the bike just wallows around, and it's kinda tough. if they still do the stop/start without putting a foot down, that could be tough for a new rider, too).of course, all of those drills in the test are of questionable value in the real world, and you could certainly pass the tests and be completely incompetant as a motorcyclists, but that's the DMV for you.^ yes, you can just keep on renewing it.

Purchasing a motorcycle has been one of the best investments I have ever made. Pretty much because I viewed it in a very pragmatic fashion. I saw it as a credit building exercise as well as a way to save a lot on gas (which I get about 70mpg). It may be tough to find the best new bike for you now in the middle of July because with gas prices and it being summer I am sure that bikes are flying out the door. You should definitely follow the plan already laid out which is to get your permit and then look at getting a bike. Some people like the notion of buying a used bike so that if you crash it while learning then you didn't junk a brand new vehicle. This philosophy works for some people but it is ultimately up to you. Just take your time while learning and always ride as if you can not be seen.

Yeah thanks man ... i'm planning on getting my license soon. i'm thinking monday august 4th then i'm going to take the classes @ the local community college i may not buy a bike till winter when all these people are making payments on something they can't drive and go .What kinda bike do you have??
7/22/2008 7:09:58 PM
I have a 2006 Suzuki GS500F. Although it is a 2006 I bought it brand new from the dealership in March of '08 so by winter time or even spring you may get lucky to find a new '07 that they are trying to push out the door and get a great deal on like I did.
7/22/2008 8:13:30 PM
^^ get you a scooter like me and we can start a gang!
7/22/2008 8:29:37 PM
The Dark Knight convinced me that my next bike needs to pop out of the front of my car whenever it breaks down.
7/22/2008 8:32:14 PM
I'm thinking very seriously about selling my SV I love my bike, but I think I may have to sell in order to afford next semester Jen- CONGRATS! That is AWESOME!! I kept my permit the entire 18 months b/c I had no need to get the endorsement (didn't intend to have any passengers). Finally got the endorsement last summer just before selling the Rebel.
7/22/2008 8:43:56 PM
Sumfoo, if you can wait until winter definitely do it. Best way to get a deal on a bike is when it's cold and people just got their credit card bill from Christmas. I'm hoping I can find another 250 this winter, but might not have the cash for it. Depends on how much money I can make this semester at a part time job. Wonder if being a server at a titty bar pays well. If it'll make the difference between getting a bike or not I'll do anything that's legal.

scooters don't do interstates welll.
7/22/2008 9:12:22 PM
Best way to get a motorcycle endorsement is to take the safety foundation course... One of the best classes you'll ever take.
