HALP!

I bought a 78 K5 Blazer today, and immediately upon getting home with it i took the top off, flipped the breather lid, and headed for the woods/swamp below my house... got it mired up pretty well, put in in 4lo-loc which then got it buried- took my friend's bronco and the tractor to get it out. (235/75/15s suck balls)... once back out to the road went to put it back in 4-hi, the lever sticks and i'm stuck in neutral... somewhere b/w neutral and 4-hi... i can get it to grind a little and did manage to get it to engage some sort of hi range gear once.

I figure its something simple and i can figure it out once crawling under it, but its dark and i'm lazy now

anyone have experience with these?

try it slightly rolling or even chillin in neutral if you havent (assume u have but). could also be shift linkage flex because i dont figure those had cables.

wont forget being 15 thinking granddad's 1978 400M f100 would power brake some 2xx's like crazy in the high school parking lot, only to remember that it had a 203. later hit 100 in the same truck on the same car spec tires.

yeah, here's my experience... when they screw up, pull them and then throw them as far as possible. install np208 or np205 or np241. $profit.

check out the linkage for binding, lack of lubrication, etc. first. most of the time that's your problem with any of the older np cases, especially if the 4wd wasn't used much. don't be afraid to manhandle it a little either if you haven't already. getting it rolling real slow just a bit as you make the shift will help too in relieving any tension that might be in the drivetrain from the pavement, smaller/underinflated tire on one corner, or whatever.

i've rolled it quite a bit, and generally f'd around with it every way i can think of- including kicking the shifter. after spending some time with google and thinking about the situation i'm reasonably sure the problem is in the shifter itself- seems to be a trouble area- considering this thing hasnt had 500 miles put on it in the last 8 years its fair to say there could be some funk and sticking.

if/when the case (or anything else major) actually does go- then i'll part it and scrap it, and turn a good profit. this thing isn't worth putting any sort of money into.

that said, i'm needing a set of 6 lug 16" wheels... so whatever tires i get for it can be later swapped to my f350

the way i've always done it is get it rolling slightly then shift the tranny into nuetral and shift the case

if the tranny is in drive and the case is in nuetral, the input shaft is hauling ass and the output gear is sitting still, not gonna mesh, same when it sitting still in park, both gears are still and probably arent gonna slide right in

oooh i need some cheap 31's, lemme know if you want to sell them.

yeah, my money is on the shifter assembly if it's been sitting that long. not uncommon.

Got the SOB moving again- the shifter is just all to hell in that thing, i think i'll make some sort of extra-afro twin stick from scrap metal for it.

Put some plugs in it, and some fresh oil and it is much happier... have one lifter ticking like hell, hopefully it'll free up (already let it run with 2 qts of ATF in the oil for about 30 mis before oil change)- maybe i can adjust it out, worse case it gives me a good excuse to put a small cam in it

other than that it runs great...have no back brakes, but they're overrated anyhow
