Do you want to eventually find I-95 from Kitty Hawk or take I-64 to HWY 13 and go under/through the Chesapeake Bay? The latter definitely seems much more interesting as I've been up and down I95, but what's the speed limit/traffic like ? 7/16/2008 7:21:54 PM |

speed limit on 13 on the eastern shore is 55 unless you're heading through one of the little crap towns in which you might slow down to 35 or 45. there's a few stoplights here and there, but it's all 4 lane.
there's not a whole lot of "scenery" but it's cool if you're just up to see something new for a change. $12 to cross the bridge-tunnel one way, $5 on the way back if you come back in less than 24 hours (time on receipt you get first time, another $12 on the way down if > 24 hours)] 7/16/2008 7:28:42 PM |

13 is the best way North. There isn't much to see but that means no traffic. 7/16/2008 7:31:13 PM |

How should I get from Kitty Hawk to NJ then? I'm not avoiding traffic, I just want to make sure I shouldn't be making a detour to get on an interstate. 7/16/2008 7:55:03 PM |

Use the directions from Google, you will avoid a headache. If you try to go 95, you will have to go to Richmond and the whole 64 to 295 to 95 can be a nightmare. 7/16/2008 7:57:03 PM |

Highway 13 is boring as fuck after you cross the bridge tunnel and until you get to the end of Delaware. Don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise.
With that being said, I'd still advise you to take that route. Taking 95 through all the major metropolitan areas is a headache, while Hwy 13 is a relaxing drive with little traffic. 7/16/2008 8:18:56 PM |

^^the only places you have to worry about traffic are DC and Baltimore. Schedule your trip so that you don't go through those cities during rush hour and you have nothing to worry about.
Its not rocket science. 7/16/2008 10:13:31 PM |

I think I got on 13 when I was stuck in traffic one time south of DC on I95. (I had no choice in the time I was driving). I didn't like it much at all, and it took me forever to get back to I95. 7/16/2008 10:19:59 PM |

I've gone from south raleigh up 95 all the way to philly in 6 hours with a few pit stops at night. No traffic, no delays, only had to slow down for the piss breaks/coffee and the tolls. I didn't even realize how fast I was making the trip was until I reached my destination before sunrise, left at midnight. On the other hand I ignored the timing and on the way back went through all the big cities at the wrong times, ended up taking close to 14 hours because of stop-and-go backups everywhere. I pay more attention to AM radio stations heading into the cities now. The sideroads and smaller highways suck during the daylight hours because the traffic can be annoying, but also at night due to the deer.

we'll be leaving Duck/OBX sometime between 9am and 11am Friday morning.
I've always gone to NY via I95 but 90% of the time I was leaving from Fayetteville. Even leaving from Greenville 95 is the obvious choice and the way we'll be heading on the return trip. The point of the thread was the fact that I have to leave Greenville and shoot to the outer banks to pick up three amigos thereby starting the vacation.
So can I go 70 in the 55 zones along the shore? 7/17/2008 2:02:29 AM |

There's a route you can take from Kitty Hawk up to Norfolk but it requires driving on the beach We had to do that once during a hurricane evacuation and it's a really pretty drive. 7/17/2008 8:40:17 AM |

You mean the "beach road" north of Corolla? I was under the impression there was a physical fence at the NC/VA border that would stop you from making such a drive. 7/17/2008 10:20:38 AM |

ugh
Google Maps Mapquest GMaps Mobile Mapblast (Windows Live)
ALL HAVE DIFFERENT ROUTES.
One wants me to go through Delaware and drive all the way through jersey. Another says I should take Cape May Ferry to shoot right into south jersey.
Can I trust any of these fucking directions? I know Garmin's map is going to be idiotic and want us to drive halfway on the beach and swim over the Chesapeake bay.
I need
119 E Sea Hawk Dr Kitty Hawk, NC 27949
to
208 White Horse Pike Absecon, NJ 08201
Seriously, someone who knows what the hell they are doing find the best route for us.
Prec'
Ferry is gonna be 67 bucks. Lol.

rodeway inn on fri/sat
quality inn sun-tue
we have a comp suite at caesar's sun. and hopefully we'll score some poker rates for the remainder of the week, but the entire stay at the others only totaled 235 (60/person) so obviously having that to fall back on is no sweat.
I guess we should take the Delaware Memorial Bridge instead of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. Unless it's actually worth the time-checking hassle as well as the fee.

I usually take del mem br to route 40. It might be fast from where you're coming to take the cape may - lewes ferry but i haven't taken that thing in years. It's only an hour from cape may to AC, but you have to schedule the ferry trip and get there on time and shit. Might not be worth the hassle. 7/17/2008 1:48:01 PM |
