Hi All,

My husband has just had a birthday, and I wanted to do a little something different for him. He's currently in a master's program at VT and just a little bit on the stressed side. I thought a good birthday gift would be an hour long session with a certified massage therapist. My question is, how much should I tip her? She's costing $60 for an hour, and she's been extraordinarily nice in setting up a time that matches his schedule. I want to be sure that I follow the whole etiquette thing because if she's good, I might start sending him on a regular basis.

Thanks for the input!

yeah she's already charging a higher price. If she is fantastic, you could tip, but it wouldn't be necessary unless you wanted to use her again.

yeah $60 is pretty cheap for an hour. I usually use the 20% rule on this as well.

Since she's been so accomadating, you might want to go ahead and tip $15-$20 bucks. I don't know what the standard tip is for this kind of thing, but it never hurts to tip a little extra. People in any service industry remember good tippers and will generally go out of their way to help you if you special issues. At least, I did when I waited tables

That being said, I make sure to tip my hairstylist and eyebrow waxer very well.

Some options on gift certs include tip amounts as well. I'd suggest only using these after knowing which therapist does good work i.e. after the initial visit if you decide to go back in the future.

My brother in law and best friend are massage therapists
15-20%

Massage therapists usually get paid an hourly wage or commission so unless she's doing out of her home, she's not getting $60/hour. If so, then I'd tip an extra $10.

and $60 is a good price for an hour massage.
I just had a 90 minute deep tissue Monday night.

Where are you sending him?

Right now we live in Blacksburg, Va. I'm sending him to Innovations Day Spa and Salon. It's a little on the girly side, but they work with everyone. They hire the massage therapist in from a chiropractor's office, I believe.

Her name is Jana---pronounced John-na. She sounds like a Helga though.

Sorry! I thought this was in chit chat. I took back my "the tip" comment to avoid a suspension.
