"NYPD cop suspended for shoving bicyclist
by Associated Press
Monday July 28, 2008, 9:54 PM

Police stripped a New York City officer of his badge and gun today after a video posted on YouTube showed him body-checking a bicyclist who was part of a Times Square demonstration.

The video was recorded Friday at the Critical Mass ride, a monthly protest of urban reliance on motor vehicles.

The video, posted anonymously, shows the officer standing in the street as bikes whiz past. He moves toward a cyclist and violently knocks him to the ground in front of crowds of people.

The officer in the video was placed on desk duty pending the outcome of a police department investigation, chief police spokesman Paul Browne said. The officer's name wasn't released.

The biker, Christopher Long, of Hoboken, N.J., was arrested because he was obstructing traffic in the heart of Times Square, a criminal complaint said. He was charged with attempted assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The complaint said Long, 29, deliberately steered his bicycle into the officer, causing both of them to fall to the ground.

During his arrest, Long squirmed and kicked, saying to the officers, "You are pawns in the game. I'm gonna have your job," the complaint said.

There were no other arrests during the ride.

Long's lawyer, David Renken, said he hopes the Manhattan district attorney's office will drop the charges. The district attorney's office said it was investigating."

or, one might say, the police report was written by the officer who attacked the cyclist. so.... i think we're going to need to hear from some eyewitnesses before we'll know what really happened.

however, we can probably get 5 pages of speculation and faces by the time that happens.

ready, set, GO

And that forum is hilarous.

They sound like Duke fans during the Henderson/Hansborough incident.

"Hansdouche was jumping into his personal space while he was reaching for the ball, the hit was completely accidental!"

"Besides, that douchebag deserved it anyway!"

Critical Mass has been all about douchebaggery and being a bunch of faggots lately.

GG, NYPD.

We need to create more laws that help to protect police officers from the pussy LIBERALS like this bike-riding faggot. Frankly, I believe that the officer would have been completely justified in drawing his gun and even shooting at the bike rider, who was obviously aiming to take the officer down. This officer should be commended for his bravery. We could use more public servants like him.

Thee Rant is the most fascinating thing I've read in days. (I don't read enough.)

My favorite exchange is where the one guy comes in to put down the actions of the cop.

Then all the other "men" call him a "pvssy" and a "c unt."

So the guy explains himself by saying that he's roughed up his fair share of perps, but he's smart enough to do it when there aren't cameras around.

Seriously, I couldn't relate to a single person posting. They're all so isolated in this sick "it's us against the world" mentality. It's just pathetic. And so many of them were out-and-out bigots. It's like everything we knew to be true but didn't want to believe is absolutely true.

And I can't chalk it up to the "pressures of the job." I think these guys are fucked up beforehand and are attracted to police work for some reason.

Are you surprised? Everybody hates on cops, so they stick together and defend their own as a defense mechanism. In the process they lose all objectivity, causing people to hate them more.

It's a vicious cycle.

^^ Apparently, according to the police report, he was riding on the center line and obstructing traffic.

However, watching the video you don't see the cop even ATTEMPT to tell the guy to stop, he just walks over towards him and shoves him off his bike.

Was it that one guy that was obstructing traffic, or the combined effect of all they cyclists. That guy, about 5 or 6 others (in the video), and the cop himself are all on the center line or left of center. In fact most of the cyclists left of center are swerving to avoid the cop that is standing in the middle of the road.

Obstructing traffic is a violation that merits assault. Check. This will totally change how I drive home tonight.

It looks to me like the cops were obstructing the flow of traffic. I see a lot of cyclists riding with the flow of traffic as the law instructs them to do, but they are hindered by two guys standing in the middle of the road at a point where there isn't even a crosswalk.
