i can't down load anything. websites load fine but when i try to down load a file the download will freeze at various points. i've swapped out the cable modem,rest the router, tried ff and ie and they still hang. both computers on the network do it i've googled my ass off and can't find an explanation. can anybody help?

sorry , any file that brings up a download manager i.e. drivers, exes etc. i tried it in ie to make sure it's not ff acting up but still have issues

Be more specific, what are you downloading and from where?

By "download manager" do you mean an external download manager, or just the download window in Firefox? If it's the former, have you tried bypassing the download manager?

clear your download history in both programs - i had the DL manager in FF do this a long time ago cause I set it to retain like 300 previous downloads, and it couldn't handle it.

also, do you have enough disk space?
are you using the administrator account?
do you have antivirus/antispyware that may be preventing it?

you said you are downloading P2P just fine, my first thought on that is you may have a virus/malware as a result of P2P....seriously, man try bittorrent.

in firefox you can set the download manager's behavior(you might try setting it to not appear at all).
also in FF you should clear your history/cache/cookies/etc.

check your router's exception list to assure your computer's specific IP address has full privileges - sometimes things can get reset randomly after powering off. something else router related is whether or not your computers are assigned static or dynamic ip addresses.

also, in a cmd prompt, (start, run, type "cmd" and hit enter > type ipconfig /flushdns to, you guessed it, flush your dns cache, which can become clogged.

yes yes no. by p2p i meant bit torrent sorry. looks like i may have picked up a virus from a torrent . just ran adaware and it's pickin up all kinds of things. i'll probably reformat and go from there thanks guys

having any issues with aim getting knocked off randomly or anything like that? i had this happen at work one time when a router was bad. have you tried connecting directly to the cable modem? that at least eliminates the router as a possible problem.
