I'd say either throwing a knuckleball or kicking field goals...both seem like you could have long careers, make money and not tear up your body too quickly 8/1/2008 8:16:15 PM |

kicking field goals or long snapping. you can make league minimum being on the coverage team and snapping. league minimum .... is a fuck load btw.
to be fair .... teaching your kdis to be left handed is also a good decision ... if you have a lefty that throws atleast 80-85 he will absolutely have a have a spot in some orginization. I plan on left handed twins so they can pitch to each other... I'll tie their right arms to their sides if i have to lol.

Conditioning - not just in one activity but being able to rapidly switch between various movements without fatiguign
Explosion: not just being a meat head, but delivering the power with speed and perfect timing
Hips: a dude with great hip movement and hip explosion, both rotational and lateral hip movements, will be balanced and always have his strength base and positional advantage
i think those three things are the basis for being a great athlete, most anything can be taught but youve gotta increase the limits of your bod to realize excellence in the techniques 8/1/2008 8:53:19 PM |

Ditto on free-throw shooting.
If you can handle the ball competently, and are quick enough not to be an extreme liability on defense....there has to be a spot on any team for a 90+% free-throw shooter.8/3/2008 2:59:36 AM |

teach it to keep a wicket...just kidding.
i would say swing a golf club, but there's a lot of lifelong golf players that aren't Tiger and aren't anywhere close. plus there's a lot of elements that go into being that good so it wouldn't count as one technique/skill.
i'd say kicking a mean field goal might be the one thing for long term sustainable athletic prosperity.
and off the field, i agree with this:

cause if you can coach, you can coach anything

matter of fact, my children will be chess playing master strategists from the get go. especially since they'll be Indian, and the only thing proven to be good at is Cricket (Vijay Singh not withstanding).

baseball - make him catch. Easiest way to make a team is be a good defensive catcher who can hit for average. Left handed pitcher is easy but that isn't something you can choose as easily.
basketball - shooting. There is always a spot on a team for someone who can stroke a three.
football (not including kicker) - safety. You dont have to be big or fast. Good instincts can mask physical deficiencies.
tennis - backhand. Its a sport dominated by serving but you cant control height or arm length. Most people's weakness is backhand. If you can make it a weapon its a decided advantage.
golf - short game, obviously. 8/3/2008 7:09:47 PM |

if you really learn that you'll be a better golfer, baseball player, softball player, volleyball player, in some positions football and soccer player, etc
i play a lot of basketball and d1 softball and it KILLS me when you have goons trying to "hit homeruns" and their head ends up facing the sky...same with "killing a driver" in golf. 8/3/2008 7:16:48 PM |

Honestly, when/if I have a boy, I'll tell him that whatever he wants to do, so do millions of other people. So if you want to be able to make a living out of it, you better work your ass off. Which sucks, because sports are meant for fun, and trying to force somebody to work at something they don't want to do when they're a teenager won't be any fun. You honestly just have to hope you have a kid with that drive. I didn't have it, which is why I got worse my last two years of HS and college. Even when people were trying to make me. Anyways, if they love it enough to do it forever, once you try to force it on them harder they probably won't love it as much and will lose interest 8/3/2008 7:24:12 PM |
