I'm trying to convince some people to switch, but all I have are the arguments I was given when I got Firefox and AVG, "THEY'RE AWESOME, THAT'S WHY!"

Anybody have any cold hard facts?? Thanks!

firefox is generally more standards-compliant, a bit faster rendering pages, and supports some awesome add-ons

IE renders text/looks better imo (haven't played with ff3 though)

avg has a significantly smaller footprint than norton and finds about the same amount of vulnerabilities as norton

AVG Free is the best imo. All my coworkers seem to agree as well, I work for a small business and most of them are software developers. If you know what you're doing use AVG, if you're retarded and/or clueless then use Norton or some shit.

^^ Are you talking about the Acid2 test? I'm just purely conceptual when it comes to my nerdiness, I couldn't code worth a damn.

General to this thread:
Haha, sweet, thanks!

the arguments for FF vs. IE vs. Safari in my opinion are pointless. From a user stand point I just say go with whichever you like better as far as UI setup, performance etc...

from a developers stand point that is a totally different question.

^ Oh, ok. I'll probably tell them to stick with IE then and get AVG.

^you should tell them to try them both...and then make an informed decision.

even for someone who isn't computer savy they can figure out which they like better for their uses and needs.

Since I'm a mac user I prefer Safari most of the time simply because it takes 1 second or less to load vs. FF3 that takes 30seconds+ to load. so its kind of a pain in the ass. Although I do like FF3's use of history and bookmarks with the fancy autocomplete

I hate IE6, 7 mainly because my code always breaks on them and I end up trying to figure out a quick fix to get the code to show properly on FF, then IE's, then Safari.

But I usually surf in FF3 and have AVG. I have Norton on a few of my older computers, but would probably put AVG once their licenses run out. Not sure how Mcfee stands up to either Norton or AVG. I had it on my older dell's in the late 90's and worked pretty good, but it's been so long.

And yes, IE6,7 do not follow w3 standards very well.

Wait, what??? There's no way.

On my 3 year old Pentium M 1.86Ghz with 2GB RAM laptop running WinXP SP3 it only takes 1.5 seconds to load.

Are you using a 486DX? Did you make sure the Turbo button was depressed?

I was using my own personal laptop as an example, but the operating system doesn't matter. I've seen it load in under 2 seconds on various Windows, Linux, and OSX boxes.

I prefer FF first, then test Safari. No one develops for IE 6 or 7 - rather they make horrible attempts to get shit working and after 2 hours of undocumented coded with half-assed named variables then leaving comments to other web programmers with the following comment:

// Don't ask me why, it just fucking works in IE 6 - LEAVE ALONE!!!

ff3 runs fine on my mbp 2.0ghz core duo. that said, safari by far for just about anything IMO

on the windows side, FF3 without any question. doing web development on a regular basis reveals the demons nested deep with IE... IE can DIAF.

fucking 3 px justification rule... seriously... 3 fucking px... And I hated when they fucked up the flash object coding in IE6 long time ago. I had like 3 websites in just flash and broke everything.

You should spend time around better web developers then.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/08/05/ditch_safari_phishing_criticism/
Quote :
"Mac users urged to ditch Safari
Published Tuesday 5th August 2008 12:46 GMT
Consumer Reports lists "thinking your Mac shields you from all risks" as one of the seven biggest online blunders that expose surfers to risk online. It advises Apple fans to consider using either Firefox or Opera in preference to the Safari web browser bundled with Macs which contains no phishing protection, unlike the competition. It also suggests using free anti-phishing toolbars such as McAfee Site Advisor or FirePhish.

"Mac users fall prey to phishing scams at about the same rate as Windows users, yet far fewer of them protect themselves with an anti-phishing toolbar. To make matters worse, the browser of choice for most Mac users, Appleā€™s Safari, has no phishing protection. We think it should," Consumer Reports said.

...

Unpatched security holes have occasionally prompted security watchers, such as US CERT, to advise against using IE. Consumer Reports is one of the first organisations to advise against using Safari, but is unlikely to be the last unless security, rather than simply great design and being cool, becomes more entrenched at Apple."

i wouldn't go that far. IE7 is pretty simple to develop for. The only reason I have to do things differently in IE7 is for things like z-index's and fixed width/height padding on elements.

and as far as IE6 I just need to load different images.

safari sucks on my mac. firefox 3 is slow on it, but doesn't crash nearly as much as Safari does. I swear that program crashes 2-3 times a day, and can't even play youtube videos.

it's a 4yro powerbook, but still it should load websites w/o a problem.

^i've actually never had that problem with Safari. I have had problems with FF3 crashing though but at least it almost always restarts and restore my session as is.
