I'm visiting (until Tues morning) and have been checking out grad schools/catching up with friends.

Depending on what happens with work within the next 4-6 months, I may be moving up in July.

Fingers crossed things happen as they need to so I can move!!!

@ snewf - what part of Brooklyn? I've been staying with friends in Park Slope and Bushwick (@ the latter, I know, not the best area...). Do you like living in BK thus far?

^ start from the top down. the top floors have the Matisses, Cezannes, Picassos, Rothkos, Kandinskys, and other that have stood the test of time.

the lower floors are a lot of contemporary artists -- still worth seeing, but many of them are just weird for the sake of being weird.

The Guggenheim and the MoMA are both fun...not to mention the desserts at the MoMA Terrace cafe is yum! Sometimes I wish I could live in nyc.

The MoMA bored me. I thought the Met was way better.

ssjamind, did you check out Ulyssess's on Pearl St? Best bar in the financial district imo.

yup! they had some good smelling food too, but i didn't eat there. we also had a function at Bayards right down the street.

also went to Swift - around the corner from McSorley's (with the McSorley's bartenders after closing the place down) - good times

I know this is a long shot, but does anyone in NYC have a room (temporary or whatever) possibly available on the cheap? Obviously, NYC cheap is not the same as NC cheap. I interned in NYC this summer, and I graduated in December. I may have a possible paid internship available to me asap, but I'd need to get housing arranged.

^^it's more of an ASAP type of thing. a company i talked with said they have room for winter interns, but they're pretty much set for the summer.

^been checking it out, but most places require you to be up there to have any chance of getting it. i thought it might be easier if someone's looking for a sublet/roommate that i knew/knew of. but we'll see.

^ e-mail people off craigslist and book a ticket to go up for a few days, I booked a ticket last week for this week and paid $140 round trip direct (RDU to JFK). Meet with them while you're up there.

Has anyone driven from NC to NYC and have any pointers?

We're just going to go by Google Maps unless anyone has time-saving/traffic-avoiding tips. And we're splitting it into two days, I'm sure. It's Greensboro to Astoria, if anyone cares.

it's a long drive - but doable in 1 day - if you are staying in the city for more than a day or so it's almost always more cost effective to fly unless you have a big payload

It's probably going to be split up. Moving stuff up there, so don't want to get there and be exhausted when there's a mattress, box springs and lots of boxes and bags to move.

When I moved up there I did it in one day, its only an 8-9 hour drive. Pack the UHaul the night before, then drive up leaving in the morning and unpack when you get there that night, or the next day. From Greensboro I'd take I-85 to I-95 in VA. In Baltimore take the Fort McHenry tunnel, not the other one. In Delaware take the Memorial Bridge over to NJ, don't cut through Philly/PA. When you're in NJ and getting close to NYC listen to AM 1010 for a report of the bridges and tunnels. If you're taking a truck your best bet will be Gothals Bridge onto Staten Island and then Verazzano Bridge into Brooklyn and then just take the BQE (278) to 31st street, last exit before Tri-Borough Bridge.

If you can use an EZPass for the trip (if you know someone that will let you borrow theirs) use it. You'll save a few bucks in tolls and probably save an hour not waiting to pay at the toll booths.

I just did that drive on Sunday. I packed the truck on Saturday and left around 2am Sunday morning. We were in Brooklyn by noon, even with a slight detour (just getting into Manhattan, took the long way), and stopping for gas/breakfast.

It's not the easiest way to do the drive, but the truck was returned by 2 so I was happy with the outcome.

Oh yeah, and I live here now. Williamsburg (E. Williamsburg), off the Montrose stop. Work in Chelsea.

Wow, our drive up was so much better than the drive back this summer. We could have made it in one day, but we didn't have a bed to sleep in when we'd get to Astoria at midnight.

NYC does rock. I'm so happy to be here now.

I LOVED the weather today. Went to Union Square to wander around in general, and especially in Whole Foods and Trader Joe's for groceries. I'm nervous about tomorrow - first day of my internship.
